Job description

The Howest Industrial Design Center (IDC) is the home base of the Industrial Product Design course. The IDC has an extensive prototyping workplace with diverse machinery for students, researchers, services and open use by the professional field and industry.

We are looking for a technically skilled, organisationally strong, communicative and handy man who, together with the workshop manager, can take over the management of the workshop, shop and machinery with the following tasks:

  • Periodic maintenance, management and operation of the extensive and diverse machinery. (Conventional wood, metal, textile and plastic processing machines. Computer-controlled milling, 3D printing, laser and water cutting machines.)
  • Management of the materials and tool shop of the Industrial Design Center. 'The shop' provides students with specific prototyping materials, borrowing of tools and reservation of machine use.
  • Supervision and support of product design students during prototyping activities in the workplace. (incl. guidance on the use of machines, monitoring safety, setting up workshops in the workshop, demonstrating prototyping techniques ...).
  • Support for the prototyping lab in the execution of service assignments for external companies. (eg Prototype construction, CNC work, Wood or Textile work ...).
  • Organize and monitor proper functioning, safety, atmosphere and order in the studio. This through active communication and interaction with students, external users, teachers and technical team.


Required diploma:

  • Technical Bachelor degree (B21) or equivalent through experience.
  • If you have a foreign diploma, with the exception of the Netherlands, a certificate of equivalence from NARIC ( must be added.

Job-specific competence profile:

  • Experience with the use, maintenance and repair of conventional machines is a must.
  • Experience in processing wood and metal are a must.
  • Specific expertise such as welding is a plus.
  • You can or learn to work quickly with new equipment, also outside your existing expertise. (eg textile, composite, 3D print ...)
  • General computer skills is a must. Knowledge of the usual Office packages and of Outlook in particular.
  • Knowledge of graphic and CAD software is a plus.
  • Driver's license B is a must. Driving license C1 a plus.


Experience in the use, organization and management of a workshop and machinery is required. Interacting with young adult girls and boys, within or outside an educational environment as well.
