Johns Hopkins University: Carey Business School

Baltimore, MD, 21202

Open Date

Mar 21, 2022

The Carey Business School (“Carey”) of Johns Hopkins University (“JHU”) seeks a collaborative, dynamic and empowering leader to serve as the next Vice Dean for Faculty and Research (“Vice Dean”).

Dedicated to the development of new business knowledge and to the education of exemplary business leaders and citizens, Carey’s mission is to expand Johns Hopkins University’s pursuit of research, discovery and education through dynamic learning opportunities, innovative faculty and interdisciplinary collaborations to help shape leaders who seize opportunities to create lasting commercial and societal value. Carey was founded on the principle that business is not an end unto itself, but a means for building a more successful society and with the goal of fundamentally changing business education through innovation and collaboration. Its approach and extraordinary success in its short history are manifestations of that ambition. The school has gone through remarkable transformation since 2007, earning accreditation in February 2017 from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). And, in the last decade, Carey has significantly strengthened its research areas and curricula to match the needs of growing sectors of the global economy by hiring innovative, productive faculty out of top PhD programs and by significantly and deliberately growing its student body. The school is led by a research-driven faculty that believes in the school’s mission, with a cohesive, senior faculty that is well-connected to its junior peers.

Given the School’s extraordinary growth story and ambition, the Vice Dean for Faculty and Research will be a key member of the leadership team at Carey, reporting directly to the Dean, and will have significant visibility and the opportunity to build upon the tremendous foundation laid and momentum set forth by outgoing Vice Dean, Valerie Suslow.

The Vice Dean will have primary responsibility for recruiting, supporting, developing and retaining diverse and highly qualified faculty—tenured, tenure-track, practice-track and adjunct—across all disciplines, with an emphasis on senior faculty recruiting in the Business of Health, and will set meaningful goals for the faculty and school to achieve to continue to enhance Carey’s global reputation. Moreover, the Vice Dean will set the strategy for faculty development; develop and implement policies; steward faculty promotions; lead faculty evaluations; and further increase the collaborative culture and sense of community and belonging among faculty and staff of the Carey Business School.

The Vice Dean will have a record of distinguished scholarly achievement, an earned doctorate in an appropriate field that merit the appointment at the rank of tenured full professor and possess outstanding leadership qualities that will elevate the brand and influence of Carey. The ideal candidate will have an aptitude for administration, ideally with experience building programs and/or leading faculty development initiatives; have the ability to recruit and retain a broad and distinguished faculty; and will bring a thoughtful and inclusive approach to faculty leadership, an unwavering commitment to and be a champion for diversity in all its forms and have a natural inclination toward experimentation and innovation.
