Position Summary    
The Department of Neurological Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is pleased to announce a search for the Vice Chair of Education and Strategic Engagement position.

The candidate will be a catalyst and a visible presence in the department, focusing on creating and sustaining 1) equity, inclusion, and belonging, 2) evidence-based solutions to health equity, 3) representational diversity, and 4) cultural humility. The Vice Chair will provide vision and leadership in inclusive excellence and lead the development, implementation, and oversight of programs and initiatives designed to create an environment where inclusive excellence is embedded in the departmental culture.

The Department of Neurological Surgery provides world-class clinical care, research and education in neurosurgery and related neurosciences. Ongoing education of residents, medical students, faculty, and advanced practice providers is vital to the education mission of the department.

Position Summary
Develop and implement education program and curriculum for surgical skills lab.
In conjunction with Vice Chair for Education, implement strategic plan for the education mission of the department. Address deficiencies within the education program by working with the appropriate stakeholders.
reate and run simulation models for the Objective Structured Clinical Exam for Neurosurgical Medical students, residents, and APPs.
 Promote faculty participation in teaching courses within the Foundations of Clinical Practice Phase I and II.
Conduct scholarship on topics such as diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ), assessment, program evaluation, and faculty development along with the dissemination through peer-reviewed publications and local, state, and national presentation.
    Provide vision and leadership for inclusion initiatives across the department’s tripartite mission, including clinical care, research, and education. These initiatives should align with departmental goals and the Center for Inclusive Excellence Strategic Plan.
    Engage leadership regarding inclusive practices for recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and trainees and assist in creating key search committees and search committee processes.
    Identify and address barriers to faculty advancement and disparities in rank and, through inclusive practices, support the chair in the equitable advancement of all faculty.
    Support the mission of the Department by leading DEIJefforts and represent the Department on various university committees.
            Serve as the ex-officio for the Department of Neurological Surgery DEI Committee
            Co-chair the Department of Neurological Surgery Faculty Development Committee


    Create seminars and workshops and oversee the content proposed by the Faculty Development Committee and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
    Ensure that faculty members are aware of institutional and national opportunities for diversity and the development of educational leadership and expertise.
    Provide support and guidance to faculty who have a specific interest in diversity and medical education and/or who are passionate about DEIJ work.
    Provide support and guidance to faculty with defined deficiencies in education, e.g., based on evaluation.
    Identify and design creative, innovative activities that will enhance the education and DEIJ experience of the members of the department aligned with the department guidelines.
    Assist with developing and fostering cutting edge education techniques.
    Support the program directors in strengthening pathway programs and mentoring medical student, resident, and fellow trainees.
    Focus on Engagement and Retention of faculty, staff, and trainees.
    Support the Administration of PWAC, Gallup, and AAMC DES inside the department.

Basic Qualifications    
A doctorate or terminal degree is required. Minimum qualifications include an MD, DO, MD/PhD, or equivalent. Academic appointment type is open and will be determined based on academic credentials.

Additional Qualifications    
The candidate must be familiar with educational technology and have a background in higher education student assessment, program evaluation, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Strong administrative, communication, and writing skills must be demonstrated. Candidates must have the ability to work independently, have a strong internal drive and demonstrate excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and organizational skills.
