Stanford is seeking a Senior Associate Vice Provost (SAVP) and Dean of Students, a newly structured role, who will play a key role in shaping the future of the division of Student Affairs and the university's long-range vision for the student experience. Student Affairs' mission is to educate students to make meaningful contributions as citizens of a complex world. The division is a diverse organization of professionals dedicated to the learning, development and well-being of all Stanford students in support of the university's overall educational mission.

The SAVP and Dean of Students role was recently redesigned to add responsibilities for residential education. Over the past year a University task force – ResX – explored and recommended a vision and plan for the undergraduate residential experience for the next quarter century. Built on the principals of health and wellbeing, belonging and community, and intellectual and personal growth, the ResX initiative will help achieve Stanford's overarching goals for an outstanding undergraduate education. The new SAVP and Dean of Students will be a key player in the implementation of ResX vision and goals.


The SAVP and Dean of Students serves as a member of the vice provost's executive team and participates in leadership of divisional and university priorities in support of all Stanford students, with a near-term priority of advancing the division's five-year focus areas defined in Our Most Important Work: Equity & Inclusion, Community & Belonging, Mental Health & Well-Being, Integrative Learning, and House in Order. The SAVP and Dean of Students routinely represents the vice provost at the university level on matters related to student care, learning and development.

The SAVP and Dean of Students provides strategic leadership and management in the care and experience of students through individual support and case management services, in oversight of graduate and undergraduate programming, in policy and programmatic decision-making related to student community life, and in supporting the health, well-being and inclusivity of the student population. Core responsibilities include designing and operationalizing the student residential experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels including parts of the university's vision for a reformed undergraduate residential experience (ResX) and overseeing the implementation and programmatic design for the addition of over 2,000 on-campus graduate student beds. This leader is also charged with developing policy and accountability standards to ensure that all students and communities thrive at Stanford; ensuring that student support processes are highly responsive to the diversity of our students including learner variability; maintaining standards of student and student-organization conduct; and overseeing divisional compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), state and federal laws and university policies.

The SAVP and Dean of Students serves as a prominent, visible leader in the campus student community and models educational leadership, engagement, personal integrity and community values for students, faculty and staff. This leader is expected to be accessible to students, with the ability to build trust and work with students on a range of difficult and challenging topics. The SAVP and Dean of Students also serves as an institutional leader within the Stanford community and with campus partners as well as in the higher education community and with Stanford parents and families.

The SAVP and Dean of Students will oversee and work collaboratively with approximately 75 staff. Reporting units include: the Office of Community Standards, Graduate Life Office, Office of Accessible Education, Schwab Learning Center and Residential Education. As Stanford continues to plan for emerging student and organizational needs, this portfolio may evolve.


As a member of the divisional executive team, provide leadership and vision for the Stanford student experience.

Provide strategic direction, create strategic plans and oversee the long-range vision, planning, implementation and assessment of a variety of programs and initiatives, primarily for students, that provide care, support and learning through individual support and case management in the residential environment and wherever students work, live and relax

Create a dynamic and productive management environment for a diverse group of student affairs professionals and student staff within the reporting units.

Represent the Vice Provost for Student Affairs on a regular basis, with delegated authority.

Serve as a leader and visible model of institutional values in development and care of students, and on student conduct and community ethics.

Advise divisional and university leadership on programmatic and policy development, including counseling and influencing university leaders on issues that have university-wide impact.

Champion major initiatives and lead complex, high-visibility program design and innovation projects that impact student and staff experiences and academic school and department functions related to students.

Direct policy development and the design and implementation of processes and systems that promote learning and development, inclusivity, and equitable access for students across the university.

Oversee the financial viability and success of the organization and ensure that deployment of resources align with divisional and university priorities.

Oversee emergency responses related to students, including development and assessment of processes and protocols.

Education & Experience:

Master's degree and at least ten years of progressively responsible leadership and supervision including administrative and financial management experience. Terminal degree, preferably a doctorate, and prior leadership experience in an academic institution strongly preferred, including demonstrated background and experience with student support and care, residential life, compliance and case management. A doctoral degree should be a preferred qualification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning and change management skills.

Exceptional respect for and understanding of the needs of a highly diverse student body at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Advanced financial expertise in budget planning and financial forecasting.

Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation and political acumen. Ability to influence people, solve problems, trouble shoot, think creatively and resolve conflicts. Ability to be a calm presence in emergency situations.

Expert analytical and problem-solving skills.

Strong knowledge of industry standards, trends and regulatory requirements.

Ability to relate to a variety of constituencies, including students, parents, faculty, community groups and alumni, and to appreciate the interests and concerns of each group.

Subject matter expertise for areas of responsibility.

Knowledge of student development theory and of concerns, challenges, interests and issues currently prevalent among undergraduate and graduate students, with a strong background in case management.

Proven ability to work in an inclusive and consultative way with faculty, staff, peers, students, parents, and the broader external community.

Demonstrated understanding and willingness to transmit the cultural and ethical values of the University as they affect students.

University on-campus housing is provided with this position; residing on campus is a condition of employment.
