:  The Sexual Violence Prevention and Support Centre at the University of Toronto is a tri-campus Equity Office that provides support to University students, staff, and faculty that have been affected by sexual violence. The Centre has a mandate to conduct intake, accept disclosures and reports of sexual violence, and to provide support to individual members of the University community relating to matters of sexual violence and sexual harassment. The Centre is a first point of contact for members of the University community who have experienced sexual violence.


Under the general direction of the Director, Sexual Violence Prevention and Support the incumbent provides services to the University community relating to sexual violence prevention, education and support. With the support of the Director, the Coordinator works to create a client-centred, trauma-informed, confidential, safe, inclusive, non-judgmental service where individuals affected by sexual violence can receive support, information and guidance on resources, accommodations and reporting options that may be available to them. The Coordinator provides front line support, case management and system navigation to clients and is an expert for the University of Toronto community on matters relating to sexual violence. This includes the following principle responsibilities: case management, consultation, crisis response, and educational/outreach initiatives.


The incumbent will provide education and training to members of the University community, on topics such as building a culture of consent on campus, bystander intervention, how to respond to disclosures of sexual violence, how to support individuals affected by sexual violence. The Centre’s approach to education and outreach and the content of these initiatives are guided by the recommendations of the University’s Expert Panel on Education and Prevention of Sexual Violence.


The Coordinator provides navigation and triage services to support and stabilize individuals by making referrals to internal services (e.g. accessibility services, health services, housing) and to external services (e.g. financial, legal, police, hospital) for members of the entire University community in accordance with the provisions set-out in the University’s Policy on Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment.


The Coordinator conducts screening/triage around sexual violence cases; screening phone calls, e-mails and walk-in visits; monitoring client flow and adherence to requests for applicable accommodations, supports or resources; case management of urgent and/or complex cases that may include situations of high risk or critical incidents in collaboration with members of the High-Risk team; developing and facilitating community referrals and referring to the University or outside community; and develops and delivers education and prevention workshops related to sexual violence across all three campuses.







Graduate level university degree in a related field (e.g. social work, psychology, public health, criminology, education, community development etc.) or equivalent combination of education and experience.



Minimum seven (7) years related experience preferably with a combination of providing counselling, (specifically trauma / crisis counselling), mediation, crisis intervention, community development projects related to sexual violence prevention / education and participation in the development of training workshops and public education. Experience with performing client intakes/assessments, taking complaints or reports of sexual violence, crisis counseling, brief or short-term counseling for individuals impacted by sexual violence. Skills in working with university-aged young adults and individuals in crisis an asset. Demonstrated understanding of the impact of sexual violence on intersectional identities when providing trauma-informed care and support. Experience serving a diverse population; understands the needs of traditionally underserved communities, including racialized students, LGBTQ students, students with disabilities, international students, etc.


Extensive knowledge of community resources for victims of sexual violence; Sound knowledge of sexual, domestic, family, and workplace violence, trauma, mental health and disabilities, and criminal issues; Knowledge of the evolutionary process of violence and violence risk assessment models; Working knowledge of the criminal justice system and civil court process; Knowledge of adult learning principles and knowledge of best practices related to addressing personal safety issues. Familiarity with de-escalation strategies and incident response.



Strong excellent oral and written communication skills, a demonstrated ability to assist individuals in crisis; a demonstrated ability to work with clients dealing with violence and trauma; Excellent interpersonal, consultation, collaboration and organizational skills; Ability to exercise patience, tact, diplomacy and discretion; Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations and facilitate discussions; Skill with standard office computer applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).



Good judgment and sensitivity, flexibility and resourcefulness; Experience working within a post-secondary environment supporting students, faculty and staff is an asset. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and senior academic administrators about issues facing students, staff or faculty in crisis and make recommendations; Demonstrated ability to relate to students, staff, and faculty in ways that build confidence and trust; Able to work in a highly diverse community with student, staff and faculty from different social locations, identities and a variety of age groups, presenting with a range of difficulties and personal issues.


Relationship management and organizational skills. Ability to deal with senior University Officers in a manner which facilitates cooperation. Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Demonstrated ability to act calmly under pressure and to deal effectively and efficiently with stressful and emergency situations. Ability to produce detailed and comprehensive reports. Inherent in this role are the knowledge, skills and attitudes specific to critical thinking and decision making, ability to analyze and assess presenting mental health concerns and collaborate with the crisis or health team in the management of these mental health concerns, and flexibility and decision making in fluid situations with unpredictable outcomes.


Occasional evening and weekend work and travel to another campus is required.
