Senior Research Laboratory Technician (Fixed Term)

We invite applications for a laboratory technician to join the Gene Silencing laboratory led by Professor Sir David Baulcombe and the Epigenetics laboratory led by Dr Ian Henderson in the Department of Plant Sciences. Funding is available for a full time position for two years in the first instance, with a start date of August/September 2019.


The successful applicant will need to provide technical support with complex experimentation as well as acting as media kitchen operative to a research group of approximately 30 staff, students and academic visitors. In addition, they will provide a media service and technical support to other groups in the Department as and when needed.


The successful applicant will assist research associates within the group with experiments on a variety of projects as required e.g. DNA isolation and quantification of DNA concentration and purity; genotyping through Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR); cloning and sequencing of constructs and their subsequent data logging; molecular biology manipulation of DNA constructs through standard restriction/ligation procedures for downstream analysis and data logging; RNA isolation and quantification.


The laboratory technician is expected to assist the laboratory manager in day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including waste disposal, glassware cleaning, equipment cleaning and maintenance, stock organization and cataloguing etc.


It is essential that applicants possess: 1) Minimum of ONC diploma; 2) Specific experimental skills and knowledge of techniques required to carry out DNA isolation, plant transformation etc. without supervision; 3) Horticultural support: soil preparation and plant potting amongst others; 4) Responsible attitude and excellent organisational and communication skills; 5) Work experience in media production; 6) IT skills (Microsoft Office, including advanced Excel)


Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2021 in the first instance.


Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
