Position Summary

The Research Officer – Machine Learning R&D will be part of a research project with the university and an Australian Defence team to improve machine understanding and prediction of individual and overall team cognitive load and problem-solving ability. To be eligible for this position Australian citizenship is required.

Accountabilities

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

• Research new and validate existing machine learning techniques for classification and prediction of human attention and awareness.
• Work with a variety of sensor modalities such as RGB/IR cameras, heart rate, EEG, ECG.
• Report experimental results and research findings clearly and effectively.
• Bridge between research and product development by integrating novel research findings and iterating on prototypes.
• Work closely with a team of multidisciplinary investigators in the initial phase of ground-breaking efforts in improving human-machine interaction and human-human collaboration.
• Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Skills and Experience

• A PhD in computer science or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
• At least two years relevant industry experience, including developing software of significant scale and complexity.
• Demonstrated experience with programming in Python and/or C++.
• Demonstrated experience with current ML frameworks such as PyTorch/Tensorflow.
• Experience with sensor data acquisition and real-time processing a plus.
• Enjoy working in a multidisciplinary academic environment with a focus on product development.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
