Research Director, Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME)

The Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME) was formed in 2020 to drive transformational change in regions and communities transitioning to a prosperous and sustainable post-mine future. CRC TiME brings together a unique partnership of over 75 leading mining companies, mining equipment, technology and services (METS) companies, regional and community development organisations, governments and research partners, who are contributing their networks, time and knowledge to enable change.

Over $130 million is being spent over the next 10 years on collaborative research and development projects coordinated and led by CRC TiME. As a nationwide initiative, CRC TiME has offices on the east and west coasts, and forms part of the federal governments CRC program to support Australian industries solve critical issues, develop new technologies, products and services and compete on the world stage. The east coast office is hosted within the Sustainable Minerals Institute. The University of Queensland's Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) is a world-leading research institute integrating the expertise of technical, environmental and social specialists to deliver responsible resource development across the life of mine. SMI is dedicated to finding knowledge-based solutions to the sustainability challenges of the global minerals industry and training the next generation of industry leaders.

About This Opportunity

As the CRC TiME Research Director you will lead the development and execution of research that aims to address complex challenges underpinning mine closure and relinquishment. Your role is critical in building and fostering relationships with our key stakeholders and partners, building projects that effectively use the leading research capability from across the CRC partnership and will provide strategic advice on the prioritisation of research within a collaborative framework. Driving high quality research outcomes, the Research Director will ensure effective planning and management of long term research projects, including assessing and determining the direction and quality of the research and delivery models that enable high impact research and commercial integration.

Working closely with the west coast based team and CEO, the Research Director will provide a clear focus for research teams and project leaders in order to develop and deliver research in partnership with end users. You will have a number of direct reports located around Australia, including Program leaders and a Research Project Manager. You will work closely with the Impact and Translation Manager and Program Leaders to build and extract high impact hypotheses that will contribute to a fundamental shift in end user and research practice. The Research Director will participate as a member of the Senior Management Team and Secretary for the Research Board Committee; and be responsible for planning, managing and having oversight over research budgets and resources.

This position is located at The University of Queensland’s picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, the 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.
