The research group of Dr. Anne Salonen at Human Microbiome Research Program (HUMI) is looking for a

LABORATORY ANALYST / COORDINATOR for HUMI research program.

The work consists of the following main tasks:

1) Laboratory coordination and management: Planning sample processing schedules and work division, managing supplies (orders and invoices), maintaining devices, creating and updating protocols and SOPs, instructing new students and trainees etc.
2) Processing of various types of biological samples for molecular analyses, mainly bacterial and fungal amplicon sequencing (NGS) and other DNA-based work: High-throughput (96-format) microbial DNA extraction, PCR and qPCR, NGS library preparation, QC and troubleshooting. Our group also uses ELISA, anaerobic bacterial culture and cell culturing, and skills or capacity to learn these readily is considered as a bonus.
3) Part-time coordinator (50 % of working time) for Human Microbiome Research Program (HUMI): The coordinator provides administrative support for HUMI personnel by organising seminars and other events, distributing relevant information via mailing list and other communication, helping in reporting etc. Duties include also e.g. procurements and acting as contact person and instructor for HUMI personnel for the use of the DNA extraction robot and/or other devices and workflows for microbiome research established in our laboratory.

The position calls for well-organized and accurate person with good communication skills and ability to manage multiple and competing tasks and responsibilities. Fluency and willingness to communicate in English both in spoken and written form is needed. We are looking for a proactive person who likes to take independent responsibility of tasks. The ideal applicant is trained as a laboratory analyst, laboratory technician or has a MSc in microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology or related field and has previous experience on NGS workflows.

Your work will assist in the advancement and developments of biomedical research in nationally and internationally recognized human microbiome research group. We provide an international, dynamic work community and opportunity to learn new things continuously.

The appointment is initially for one year, with possibility for continuation. The applications are invited by December 15 and the appointment starts in January 2022 or as agreed.

Salary is based on the demands level chart for supporting personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid. The overall starting salary will be ca. 2500 €/month, depending on the education and previous relevant research experience of the candidate. The position will be filled with a 6 months trial period.
