Penn State Erie, The Behrend College seeks a Research Core Facilities Coordinator to oversee and coordinate activities of core research instrumentation in the college. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research, this position will manage the day-to-day operations of laboratory instrumentation shared among the schools of science and engineering, train faculty and students to operate instrumentation and collaborate with faculty members to conduct experiments in support of their research. Key Responsibilities include: oversee and coordinate activities of shared research instrumentation; develop and implement standard policies and procedures integral to the management and operation of shared instrumentation; oversee the management of instrument-related materials, including monitoring cost effectiveness; train users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques, explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes; responsible for the operation of microscopic imaging instrumentation as well as related data analysis for selected research projects; consult with users to refine or adapt methodologies to fit specific experimental requirements and collaborate in the development of new techniques; manage budgets for shared instrumentation upkeep and end-of-life replacement; develop and manage shared instrumentation user processes, including scheduling and user fee accounting; maintain external research relationships to identify and develop new funding sources; contribute to technical proposal preparation and/or presentations; troubleshoot operational issues and develop action plans to resolve; collaborate with investigators and administration on significant operational issues/barriers; actively promote safety for students, faculty and co-workers; may co-author or author publications and may co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/or conferences; assist in acquiring research funding including writing grant proposals. Applicants must have a Master’s or Ph.D. (preferred) in science or engineering; 5+ years’ experience in the use of wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research related software, including experience in the use of microscopic imaging technologies. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail; excellent written and oral communication skills. A proven ability to communicate effectively with faculty and students in a variety of disciplines.
