Job description

Job summary

The Wellcome Trust has invested in an Institutional Translation Partnership Award to allow Imperial to enhance the translation of its medical technology in our ‘MEd TechOne’. Translation is at the heart of our strategy. We have created infrastructure to support life sciences opportunities with established translation models and our structures support medicine/hospital-based research to first in human for low-risk medical technologies and therapeutic solutions (i.e. the Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC), the NIHR Imperial College Bio-medical Research Centre (BRC) and the NIHR Clinical Research Network for North West London communities). Our central infrastructure supports early-stage industry agnostic ventures and entrepreneurs.

With the advent of this inspiring venture, comes the need for a motivated manager/leader for the ‘MedTechCollaborative’ part of the award. The MedTechCollaborative will form connections to local and national networks of different clinical specialties. This includes coordinating evaluations of our technologies in wider clinical trials, as well as accepting devices into our medical technologies programme for support at all stages of translation, from first-in-human to early adoption. The MedTechCollaborative activities will be distributed across Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Hospitals (Charing Cross, Queen Charlottes’ and Chelsea Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital and Western Eye Hospital) benefitting from existing associated clinical translation infrastructures, the Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC), the NIHR Imperial College Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and the NIHR Clinical Research Network for North West London communities, and associated centres such as the Imperial Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) based at the Hammersmith Campus, and Imperial College Clinical Trials Unit. The successful post holder will support the strategic priorities set out by the Steering Committee and the College and lead on essential communications between various stakeholders going forward, ensuring the alignment of aims and coordination for planning.

Duties and responsibilities

As the Project Manager for this pioneering project, the post holder will lead the vision of the MedTechCollaborative, facilitating the wider evaluation and adoption of new medical devices within the Imperial College NHS Trust.

Key Responsibilities

    • In collaboration with the Project Steering Committee develop and lead the strategic plan, in line with the funder requirements.
    • Build effective collaboration with Imperial NHS Heathcare Trust, the Wellcome Trust and other stake holders nation -wide, both within the public and private sector, to facilitate the affective translation of technologies into Clinical Trials bringing the vision of the WT award to fruition.
    • Lead on supporting new and wider evaluations of medical technologies, ensuring all legal requirements are adhered to
    • Create and manage the clinical advisory board for the project and support the decision-making processes of this board for the duration of the project including acting as a trusted advisor on all governance matters.
    • Manage the sub-project finances ensuring it remains on budget (£3 million over 3 years) and provide necessary reports to the Wellcome Trust as and when required. Lead the collaboration with public sector organisations, private sector organisations and the government to support the objectives of the award.
    • Plan and analyse problems and communicate results and defined objectives to the research group under the leadership of the primary investigators (PIs).
    • Work independently to develop and implement a coherent communication plan that helps promote the work and impact of the MedTechCollaborative and raises the profile both nationally and internationally.
    • Demonstrate ability to work with the team to develop the sustainability and creation of a broad network of relationships across the academic and clinical worlds in the United Kingdom and beyond.
    • Develop and set quality standards, metrics, impact and effectiveness measures for the project, including priorities and a communications programme, making improvements as required.
    • Ensure effective co-ordination, alignment and interface between the various different stakeholders.
    • Identify and assist with the recruitment of contributors and collaborators as needed.
    • Create and manage a business plan for the sub-project, including costings and implementing this plan for the duration of the project and beyond as needed.

Essential requirements

    • Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject
    • Experience of communicating and working at a senior level, preferably closely with an organisation CEO, to build relationships and promote an organisation
    • Experience of developing and implementing communication strategies and ensuring effective delivery
    • Proven expertise in organisational development and the implementation of strategy
    • The ability to lead decisively to proactively solve problems and enact decisions, whilst also taking into consideration the different opinions and needs of stakeholder groups
    • Patience, resilience and a problem solving ‘can do approach’ combined with analytical rigour, and structured evidenced-based thinking
