Since the first Apollo Mission on the Moon in 1969 the Space Research and Planetary Sciences Division of the University of Bern is actively participating in space exploration missions to planetary objects in our solar system, such as Moon, Mars, Jupiter and others. For a new mission opportunity, the group has to deliver a novel mass spectrometric system that shall measure on-site the chemical composition of solids fully autonomously. Current plans foresee to send the first of two units mid-2020. To help meet these challenges, we are now seeking an experienced Project Manager 80-100%.

The instrument development will be led by the University of Bern, whereby substantial involvement of industrial partners is foreseen. The main responsibilities of this position are top-level project planning, monitoring of budget, and risk management of the project.

The position comprises following tasks:
• Plan, coordinate and monitor the hardware development for the mass spectrometric system, internally and with international partners.
• Closely cooperate with electronics and mechanical engineering team at University of Bern and support related administrative activities.
• Report development progress to national and international partners, and funding agency.
• Coordinate all supporting research activities at the University of Bern related to instrument development.
• Coordinate laboratory infrastructure at University of Bern for calibration, verification, and testing.
• Prepare and see through the environmental tests and actual calibration of the flight hardware.
• Monitoring of financial budget.
• Risk management and elaboration of mitigation strategies.
Your profile should indicate experience with project management, a background in engineering, an interest in hardware development, high flexibility, and motivation to work in an international and dedicated team at the interface of academic research and industry. Experience with space science or space instrumentation is highly appreciated. The successful candidate will plan and coordinate together with the top-level management all mission-related activities at the University of Bern and will represent the University of Bern in meetings and teleconferences with our industry and international partners. The responsibility of the position requires flexibility to travel. Good spoken and written knowledge of English is required. German would be an advantage.
