Position Summary

The Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill seeks a Program Director for its Preventive Medicine Residency (PMR). The Department has a long history of leadership locally and nationally, and since 2015 has been the institutional home of the preventive medicine residency training program. The UNC PMR is one of the oldest and most well-established programs in the country and has trained more than 200 physicians in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine over the past 50 years.

The responsibilities of the PMR Program Director (PD) include leading and administering all aspects of the residency in compliance with Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) standards, securing and maintaining program funding, mentoring, and supporting resident education and well-being, and assuring ongoing program evaluation and improvement. This role assumes 30 to 40% of the PD’s time. The balance of the time may be spent within UNC in clinical work, educational endeavors, administration, research, or in other settings aligning with the PD’s clinical training, skill set, and interests, such as governmental public health, industry, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or non-profit work. The director will work with senior leadership in the department and in the UNC School of Medicine, UNC School of Public Health, and state health department to advance all aspects of the program.

The Department prefers full-time positions but is willing to negotiate to no less than .75 FTE (full time equivalent).

Educational Requirements

MD or DO required. Candidates must be board certified in Preventive Medicine. Board certification in a clinical specialty is preferred but not required.
Qualifications and Experience
Previous experience in research and/or education is strongly desired. Applicants must have evidence of potential for developing extramural funding, especially regarding training grants.
