:  The Rotman Commerce program is offered jointly through the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Rotman School of Management. Consequently, the position of Managing Director, Rotman Commerce is a key position in the development and implementation of Rotman Commerce programs and services.


Reporting to the Program Director, Rotman Commerce, the incumbent will work regularly with the Program Director and the program’s senior management team (Director, Academic Services and Student Life; Director, Career Services; Manager – Operations; Manager – Strategic Marketing & Communications; Manager – Data and Analytics; Director, Advancement and Alumni Relations; Executive Director, Centre for Professional Skills) to develop and oversee the program budget and help to execute the program’s strategy across different functional areas such as: recruitment and admissions; academic and registrarial services; student life and experiential learning; and marketing, communications and external relations. Although the Rotman Commerce Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations and the Executive Director, Centre for Professionals Skills do not report to the Managing Director, as with the other members of the senior management team, the Managing Director will work closely with both these members of the senior management team to assist with budget development and oversight, human resources and provide support where needed. The Managing Director will have primary responsibility for managing and developing the space, financial, technology, and human resources that support the work of the Rotman Commerce staff and enhance the experience of Rotman Commerce students. The Managing Director works closely with faculty, academic administrators, and other senior administrative staff from the Rotman School, the Faculty of Arts and Science, and the Provost’s Office to represent the program in the broader University context, and to support and defend the program’s interests with these constituencies.


The role of the Managing Director, Rotman Commerce will focus on four critical areas: (1) program leadership and strategy development in cooperation with the (Program) Director and both Faculties; (2) management of the complex operational issues around budget, financing, space planning, facilities management and information technology; (3) management of external relations including relationships with corporate partners, as well as all print, electronic, social media, and other communications activities that contribute to the external brand and awareness of the program (and support the management of external relations involving alumni and donors by working in cooperation with the Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations); and (4) management of human resources at Rotman Commerce.





MBA or other relevant post graduate degree is required and/or a combination of academic and senior program management experience such that the individual will have recognition and credibility with students, faculty, alumni, and the general business community.




A minimum of 10 years experience in program development and administration preferably within a business school/university environment. A creative but pragmatic strategic thinker with strong managerial, follow-through, and implementation skills along with proven marketing and networking talents. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to perform in an advocacy role and continue to raise the profile of Rotman Commerce. Must have strong analytical skills; experience with strategic budgeting, budget forecasting and financial analysis; adept with using critical analysis of data (including admissions, employment and survey data) to inform strategic decision-making. Proven ability to perform effectively in the team based collegial culture of Rotman Commerce and the University; advanced consultative, facilitation and decision-making skills. A strong leader who can direct and manage a large team.




Due to the senior-level nature of this position, the Managing Director will be a confident self-starter with a wide variety of experiences which can be applied to the demanding set of decisions which present themselves. Understanding of the complexity of the academic environment is an asset. Must be a strong leader who has an appreciation and understanding of the changing needs of business education, the changing competitive landscape and is able to position Rotman Commerce as a preferred educational choice and a preferred corporate recruiting source. Has a proven track record of being able to develop and sell competitive differentials within a highly competitive, international market. Politically astute with the ability to undertake sensitive negotiations and advocate for Rotman Commerce.
