Stanford Medicine is seeking a motivated and resourceful Manager, Research and Instruction Services (Librarian 3) to lead a team of library staff in support of the education and research initiatives of Stanford Medicine. Reporting to the Director, Research and Academic Collaboration (and User Services) the Manager, Research and Instruction Services oversees the day to day operations of the Research and Instruction Unit, the Lane Liaison program and research and literature review support services.

 

The Manager actively collaborates with all units of the Library to improve processes and services. S/he is responsible for the evaluation and assessment of services related to outreach and instruction and develops and implements new programs to meet the demands of faculty, students and staff in supporting their clinical and research needs.

 

As part of the Research and Instruction team the manager engages in activities comparable to other librarians in the unit by providing research consultations; developing portals and web pages to facilitate user access to resources; offering orientations and instructional sessions; serving as a liaison to key clinical and research departments or centers and well as performing literature searches and/or collaborating on systematic reviews.

The position works closely with other staff to influence and achieve our collective goals in support of the School’s research, clinical and educational mission.

 
Duties include:
  • Supervise three or more library staff in the Research and Instruction Unit.
  • Identify opportunities for new services to support the needs of students, faculty and clinicians. Conversely identify services and practices to retire.
  • Systematize service delivery within the unit and across the liaison program.
  • Formulate polices and propose plans for programs or services, implement and ensure that policies and procedures are followed.
  • Lead Lane Liaison program.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of end-user training including the development of web-based tutorials and in-person classes, workshops and orientations. Including assessment plan for such a program.
  • Run Lane’s expert searching service in support of research projects, curriculum revision, systematic reviews, bibliometrics and patient care.  Train and support library staff to use service tools effectively.
  • Recommend library materials and information resources to support education and patient care.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong leadership and mentoring skills with the ability to supervise professional librarians and library staff (Supervisory experience preferred)
  • Solid understanding and application of Evidence-Based Medicine and educational pedagogies.
  • Advanced level of searching competence with experience executing systematic reviews, meta-analysis or related research projects.
  • Ability to think creatively and identify new areas of library service across the institution.
  • Ability to work as part of a small, highly collaborative team.
  • Ability to easily network and influence both internally and externally across the organization.
  • Capacity to meet expectations in a changing environment
  • Flexibility while influencing others to improves processes and implement change.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, and instructional skills.
  • Demonstrated teaching ability using a variety of educational pedagogies
  • Enjoys working as part of a small, highly collaborative team
  • Demonstrates patience, political savvy, and a sense of humor when obstacles present themselves
  • A Master’s Degree in Library Science or the international equivalent
  • Previous experience working in a health sciences library 
 
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and five years of experience in a relevant library setting with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibilities or a combination of education and relevant experience.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Deep understanding and engagement with the range of library operations, trends and practices.
  • Evidence of professional contribution and achievement beyond the library may be expected at this rank.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging with colleagues across the University and beyond in a collaborative and construction fashion.
  • Ability to manage projects, develop policies or drive library initiatives across functional lines.
  • Ability to interact with internal or external developers to evaluate and recommend modifications of software, online databases or digital resources. Understanding of software development life cycle and ability to interact effectively with staff engaged in software development.
  • Demonstrated success in independently performing complex job functions such as collection management reviews, preparation of major exhibits, developing policies for business practices.
  • Evidence of engagement in relevant professional or academic communities.
  • Consistent display of excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
  • Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
  • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.
