The Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Manchester offer’s world-leading programmes across a wide range of subjects. The Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre was completed in 2006 representing the first university-based, purpose-built research institute of its kind within the UK. Focusing on advanced quantitative approaches to specific biotechnology challenges at the interface between medicine and Biology, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics and Computation, MIB enjoys a unique pluralistic and open research culture, supported by world-class infrastructure.

Renamed the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology in autumn 2012, capturing in the institute name the leading research activity and focus in the many areas of biotechnology including, medical biotechnology and therapeutics, biofuels and energy and industrial biotechnology. 

The role of the Technical Operations Manager is to manage the staff, facilities and environment to enable the delivery of high-quality technical support which is aligned to the strategic objectives in research and quality services of the Institute and to ensure its technical services provision is at the forefront of sector best practice. This will involve providing strategic leadership for, and management of all technical and experimental staff and services within their area of work and ensuring coordination and alignment with technical services across the Faculty and wider University as required. 

You will work closely with the academic community and heads of business areas and other colleagues in the delivery of world class research. The role will require a culture of continuous improvement within the technical and experimental support services and will entail significant change management.

You would be expected to have significant experience of managing/working at a senior level in a science/engineering laboratory or technical environment, extensive experience of managing a relevant research laboratory environment (including leadership and line management of technical staff) and the ability to generate new ideas and support change management including experience of supporting and motivating a team through change.
