Junior Group Leader in Children's Brain Tumour Centre of Excellence
University of Cambridge, CRUK Children's Brain Tumour Centre of Excellence
United Kingdom

Senior Research Associate (£41,526-£52,559) or Principal Research Associate (£60,905-£70,579) depending on skills and experience, plus a support package.

We are seeking applications for a Junior Group Leader (JGL) position to develop and lead a research team aimed at understanding the basic biology and/or preclinical therapeutics of paediatric brain tumours, and/or using accurate preclinical models to develop new therapies for these devastating diseases.

The successful applicant will be part of the UK's first and only CRUK Children's Brain Tumour Centre of Excellence (CRUK-CBTCE) based at the University of Cambridge. This unique venture unites investigators focusing on brain tumour biology and stem cell research within the University of Cambridge with world-leading drug discovery and development groups at the Institute for Cancer Research, London. The CRUK-CBTCE is formed around an innovative pipeline designed to discover and develop completely new treatments for childhood brain tumours.

We are seeking applicants from a variety of fields and particularly welcome candidates who can bring a fresh perspective to childhood brain tumours by applying expertise gained in other areas of cancer biology. As examples, candidates could bring expertise in immuno-oncology, DNA damage responses, radiation biology, advanced animal models, and innovative approaches to identifying new therapeutic targets, amongst others, and apply these to childhood brain cancers.

Successful applicants will be expected to lead a world-leading independent research programme that contributes to the overall goals of the CRUK-CBTCE, CRUK Cambridge Centre and Institute. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, establishing a strong track record of high impact research papers, providing academic training and supervision for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, establishing research collaborations, presenting research outcomes to international audiences, applying for grant funding, and managing the group budget and resources.

The post would be held within the CRUK Cambridge Institute, one of four core-funded CRUK Institutes. Our core award allows us not only to provide direct, flexible support to each of our Junior and Senior group leaders but also enables us to maintain world-class research support facilities (https://www.cruk.cam.ac.uk). Unlike traditional start-up packages, core funding is provided to every group leader as long as they hold their position in the institute.

Candidates will have a PhD and/or MD, have completed highly successful postdoctoral research, be well underway in establishing themselves as an internationally recognized expert in their field, and have breadth of knowledge across cancer research.

Appointments will be at the University level of Senior Research Associate. In exceptional circumstances, and on the basis of a demonstrable history of achievement, payment of a salary supplement or appointment at the level of Principal Research Associate may be possible.

It may be possible to offer a CRUK enhancement to the salary range stated for these roles. Any such CRUK enhancement would be awarded on the basis of a demonstrable history of exceptional achievement and is entirely at the discretion of the University. Appointments to Senior Research Associate are subject to Faculty Board approval. Appointments to Principal Research Associate are subject to approval by the Pro-Vice Chancellor.

For additional information, please contact Deanna.Patmore@cruk.cam.ac.uk.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 5 years in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check and a security check.
