NRI is located in Kannapolis on the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC), about two hours from Chapel Hill (25 min from Charlotte NC). Also housed on the campus are programs from UNC Greensboro (Center for Translational Biomedical Research), NC Central University (Nutrition Research Program of the Julius L. The NRI is the only UNC Chapel Hill research institute located in central/western North Carolina and one of only three UNC Centers housed outside of the mother campus in Chapel Hill/Carrboro.

The NRI works to discover why people differ in their metabolism and nutritional requirements through the study of health and human development and discovering how genetic, epigenetic, microbiome, metabolic mechanisms and environmental exposures affect a person’s requirements for and responses to nutrition.
