Head of Humanities

The Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, will launch an ambitious new strategy for the development of human data science, digital research and education through a newly established Centre for Digital Humanities. We are now seeking a visionary and committed Head of Centre who will drive the development of human data science, digital research and research-based education within and across the academic fields of the Humanities.

The position is available from 1 May 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The primary aim of the Centre is to support researchers at the Faculty of Humanities in setting bold agendas for digital humanities; to develop large-scale data-driven research, and to critically reflect on the implications of digitisation and machine learning in research and society. The Head of Centre will be responsible for driving the advancement of human data science and digital humanities in line with the rapid development of AI, machine learning and other technologies, and to lead the coordination and expansion of the many types of research activities and environments currently engaged with human data science and digitization at the Faculty of Humanities.

Profile and job content

We expect the Head of Centre to be an internationally recognised and innovative researcher who will significantly contribute to large-scale data-driven research in the humanities. The Head of Centre will be appointed as Professor or Associate Professor on the UCPH Promotion Programme, depending on qualifications, and will have both the academic and managerial responsibility for the Centre for Digital Humanities.

The Head of Centre develops the Centre's vision and activity plan in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities’ research leadership. The Head of Centre ensures the implementation of the Centre’s vision through collaboration, counselling, and research support to the faculty’s researchers; the coordination and expansion of the Centre's activities through externally funded commissions; procurement and maintenance of digital infrastructure, and support for the integration of human data science and digitality in research-based education. The Head of Centre will also collaborate with digital actors across faculties and universities, as well as facilitating exchange of ideas and collaboration with external stakeholders, promoting the profile of human data science and the dialogue between digital humanities and the wider world.

The Head of Centre will lead a team of data specialists who will facilitate the development of human data science skills among faculty staff, advise and support individual researchers in solving challenges specific to large-scale data-driven research and research applications, and support the development of digital research-based education in the Humanities. Some of the activities of the Centre's data specialists will involve externally funded research commissions in collaboration with collective research projects. Other activities will include supporting individual researchers in the development of research ideas and applications, as well as organizing courses and workshops on digitality in the various fields of humanities research.

In addition, the Head of Centre will work with researchers and research groups in the departments to procure and maintain digital research infrastructure, and will lead the Centre’s efforts to provide visibility, overview, and access to internal and external digital resources and facilities, specialized labs, computing power and storage capacity.

In addition to the managerial tasks, which will account for 50% of the time, duties of the position also include the Head of Centre’s own research and development of his or her specific field of research, assessment tasks and grant applications. Teaching, supervision, knowledge exchange and outreach to society will be an integral part of the work in the centre and department.

The Head of Centre will be employed in a permanent position as Professor, or as Associate Professor on the UCPH promotion programme, in the department that best fits his or her research profile. The position as Head of Centre for Digital Humanities will be for a period of four years with the possibility of extension.
