Overview

The Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD) at ORNL seeks a Section Head to lead Materials in Extremes research, focusing on metallic, ceramic, and composite materials for harsh environments such as nuclear energy, fusion, combustion, space, transportation, and bioenergy. This leadership role combines scientific research and strategic management, reporting to the Division leadership and serving as a Distinguished R&D Staff Member.

You will guide world-class research programs, mentor team leaders, oversee experimental facilities including LAMDA and mechanical test labs, and drive the Division’s mission in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead innovative, internationally recognized research in materials for extreme environments.

  • Mentor Group Leaders and foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture.

  • Strategically advance the Division’s mission and vision in materials R&D.

  • Oversee experimental facilities and communicate resource needs to Division leadership.

  • Promote ORNL’s core values: Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field.

  • Minimum 12 years of professional research experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading R&D groups or teams.


Preferred Qualifications

  • High scientific productivity with peer-reviewed publications and recognized impact.

  • International reputation in area of expertise.

  • Proven track record of funded research proposals and program development.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Self-motivated, independent, and able to collaborate in fast-paced environments.


Special Requirements

  • Submit three letters of recommendation.

  • Visa sponsorship not available.

  • Position requires access to export-controlled technology and the ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, including participation in the WSAP testing program.
