Position Overview

HBKU seeks applications for the position of Internal Audit Lead – Business and Administration. The applicant will be responsible for leading and executing internal audit engagements related to HBKU’s administrative and other business functional areas, including Finance and Administration, Communications, Strategic Planning & Partnerships, President’s Office, HBKU Press, and other institutional support entities. This role ensures that governance, risk management, and internal control processes in these areas are effective, efficient, and aligned with institutional strategic objectives and priorities.


Job Role Description

  • Contribute to the development of risk-based Internal Audit plans covering administrative and other business functional areas
  • Participate in periodic risk assessments to identify and evaluate emerging risks affecting administrative areas and develop engagement-level audit plans
  • Lead or contribute to execution and reporting of internal audit engagements in accordance with audit standards
  • Perform audit fieldwork, analyze data, and evaluate internal controls and compliance
  • Coordinate audit activities with stakeholders and external auditors as needed
  • Provide independent evaluations of governance, risk management, and internal controls
  • Ensure high-quality documentation of audit work (planning, fieldwork, evidence, findings, conclusions) in accordance with HBKU methodology and Global Internal Audit Standards
  • Prepare clear, risk-focused audit reports with findings, root causes, risks, and recommendations
  • Communicate with management to validate findings and develop recommendations
  • Escalate unresolved issues or independence conflicts to the Internal Audit Director
  • Prepare and review audit reports for approval by the Internal Audit Director
  • Monitor implementation of audit recommendations and report progress
  • Collaborate with university leadership to understand operations and risks
  • Report audit findings and recommendations to stakeholders
  • Provide advisory support on academic governance, research compliance, and student-related risks
  • Ensure compliance with Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS)
  • Support quality assurance and improvement program (QAIP) activities
  • Supervise and mentor audit staff
  • Identify opportunities to improve academic, research, innovation, and student-related processes
  • Monitor trends in higher education and research compliance
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Business, Public Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • 6–8 years of internal audit experience, including at least 2 years in academic, research, or student-related audits
  • CIA required; CRMA, CISA, or higher education certifications are a plus
  • Experience in higher education or research environments preferred
  • Strong knowledge of Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS)
  • Experience supporting quality assurance and improvement programs
  • Ability to analyze data using audit tools
  • Strong understanding of academic operations, research compliance, and student services
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills; Arabic is an advantage
  • Proficiency in MS Office
