The Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR) at the University of Oxford is seeking to appoint a highly experienced communications/media relations professional to the role of Head of Communications at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ), based in Norham Gardens, Oxford.


The Head of Communications will take overall responsibility for delivering on the agreed communications strategy ensuring the Institute’s messages are clear, compelling, and consistent across a range of platforms that enhance visibility, impact, and engagement with key audiences.


This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who can creatively and proactively support the Institute’s media relations and effectively leverage the Institute’s activities across journalist fellowships, leadership development and various research events to increase the Institute’s impact, visibility, and engagement with target audiences across the world.


This senior role will require strong leadership skills as well as creative vision for the development and delivery of a comprehensive external relations and media strategy for the Institute. The postholder will be able to demonstrate an interest in cutting-edge research across a wide range of important global issues and an understanding of the Reuters Institute’s scope and ambition. They will be a strategic thinker able to meet deadlines and targets and to work under pressure whilst distilling, digesting, synthesising and interpreting complex academic findings to communicate and to engage with a wide range of international audiences. Excellent management and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and motivate staff and to effectively plan and manage communications for a small but complex organisation are also essential.


The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate in-depth experience of successful communication to varied international groups.


A first degree in a relevant subject is required, whereas previous experience of working in an international environment along with relevant professional qualifications in marketing, PR or journalism (e.g. CIM or CIPR) are helpful but not essential.


This is a full-time and fixed-term appointment until 31 December 2020, available from 1 June 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
