Woodside and Monash have joined forces to develop a state-of-the-art ‘living laboratory’ and long-term research partnership to support Australia’s low-carbon energy transition. Woodside is contributing $16.5 million to the construction of the Woodside Building for Technology and Design, located in the Monash Technology Precinct, which houses Australia’s largest concentration of research institutions and leading engineering companies. Woodside and Monash will also jointly invest more than $40 million into the ongoing research partnership over the next seven years.

FutureLab is a community of exceptional thinkers and innovators that work together to facilitate collaborative research and innovation through a range of activities, drawing out new ways of thinking, connecting experts with blue-sky thinkers, creating new knowledge through research, and driving technology breakthroughs. Monash is part of the FutureLab network, one of three based in Australian universities; a transformational hub for technological innovation, focussing on integrating rapid prototyping, advanced materials and information technology across all operations.

 

The role

The University and Woodside are seeking a FutureLab Director and Woodside Chair to lead this exciting partnership. The role will be responsible for ensuring the success of FutureLab through leading research that delivers innovative solutions to global energy challenges. The FutureLab Director and Woodside Chair will be responsible for building FutureLab’s brand and reputation by developing and broadening high-level strategic partnerships and networks, managing collaborative relationships with Woodside Energy, securing external funding, and positioning FutureLab to lead a national and international research agenda.  The role requires a demonstrated track record of research, innovation and collaboration working with, or in partnership with, industry.

 

The FutureLab Director and Woodside Chair will be responsible for academic leadership of the FutureLab, growing the R&D agenda, leading engagement activities, delivering projects with Woodside stakeholders, and driving a strong culture of collaboration and rapid innovation that builds FutureLab into a hub for new research themes and projects. The successful applicant will have a record of outstanding scholarly activity and be researching in one of the following areas: structural materials, 3D printing, materials durability, materials informatics, data and optimization, and will hold a doctoral qualification.
