Position Title:

Financial Officer (FIN2B)

Position Summary:


Under the direction of the Director of Finance, the Financial Officer will play a vital role in the monitoring and compliance of funds, in the building and analyzing of complex data and reporting as well as will work in close collaboration with the Financial Officers within the various Administrative Excellence Centers (AECs) to ensure a smooth and efficient functioning of the Faculty’s financial administration and reporting activities. He/she will be responsible for the following:

Primary Responsibilities:


    Manage and evaluate a portfolio of funds along with ensuring the sound financial operations and co-ordination of activities in the areas related to finance, including approving and reviewing various financial transactions and activities (ex: McGill Market Place);

    Build and analyze complex reports to fulfill both internal (within the Faculty of Medicine) and external (Central) needs, which further includes the extraction of complex detailed data for strategic planning purposes;

    Gather, extract and analyze data on respective AEC financial transactions, as well as establish an efficient process to run, analyze and review data with Director;

    Review the financial impact of business plan proposals relating to new academic programs, international initiatives and other projects that have financial impact on the Faculty’s finances;

    Conduct budget and variance analysis;

    Communicate and assist with business plan requests, including holding regular meetings to review plans and make adjustments accordingly;

    Act as a key liaison between the Financial Affairs Dean’s Office team, and the AEC’s within the Faculty of Medicine on financial service team administration, including managing the on-boarding of new Financial Services team members;

    Assist with new financial activities and initiatives to establish an efficient workflow;

    Team Supervision.


Minimum Education & Experience:


Undergraduate degree


Three (3) years' related experience






Five (5) years' related experience

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of accounting and financial management. Ability to administer funds and prepare detailed budgets. Knowledge of McGill fund types (or other University) including experience working with research grants is an asset. Ability to effectively communicate and interact with various levels of staff and academics. Service-oriented with excellent customer service skills and the ability to establish productive working relationships quickly. Demonstrated ability creating comprehensive financial statements; working with complex formulas and creating detailed professional reports. Experience working with large data sets. Proficiency with computerized application including spreadsheets, databases, wordprocessing software, Banner FIS, Crystal reports and Excel. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills. Proven organizational skills with ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines. Proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a team. Ability to train and motivate staff. Proven success in facilitating and maintaining strong, consistent, and positive communications to a diverse audience. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills in both English and French. Accounting or Finance designation is considered an asset (CMA or CGA).
