The Department of Education at the University of Oxford has been making a major contribution to the field of education for over 100 years and today has a world-class reputation for research, for teacher education and for its Masters and doctoral programmes. In 2017/18 the department’s annual income including research income was £10.2m. The department has a large and diverse research funding portfolio, currently valued in excess of £13m, and is also responsible for managing government PGCE bursary funding valued at £3.4m per year.


As Finance Manager you will hold a key role in the administrative structure of the department. You will be responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day management of the department’s financial functions, including ensuring all activities adhere to the University’s financial and personnel regulations and statutory legislation as appropriate. You will oversee all core finance functions within the department and will be responsible for budgeting, management information and financial planning for the department. You will lead a team of three finance professionals and provide strategic and operational financial advice and support to senior academic and administrative staff. You will also work closely with the department’s senior staff on the management and reporting of externally funded research grants.


As a highly skilled professional, you will hold an accounting qualification as well as a proven track record of success in an accounting environment including management accounting, budgeting and providing complex financial information to non-finance audiences. You will be able to provide effective leadership to the finance team along with holding excellent skills in communicating and networking across a range of stakeholders. You will have strong Excel skills and a good understanding of financial IT systems, and be highly organised with strong problem-solving skills. You will enjoy working in a fast-changing, dynamic, informal and vibrant environment, and will be able to work flexibly, responding to change and using your initiative. Ideally you will have experience of working in the higher education sector.


The post is permanent and full-time (part-time hours at or above 0.8FTE will be considered).
