About the role

This position is the lead professional role within the faculty, providing key leadership and contributing to the strategic/operational management of the faculty. You will be responsible for overseeing the management of plans and processes to deliver operational services to the faculty to ensure it meets its academic, research, teaching and learning outcomes. In particular, the Faculty Executive Director (FED) will be the conduit between the Faculty and UNSW professional service teams which may be located in the faculty or centrally.

Some key accountabilities:


  • Make a significant contribution to the formulation of the Faculty strategic plan and support the Dean and senior colleagues in providing strategic advice.
  • Work with the Dean and senior colleagues to operationalise the Faculty strategic plan and deliver all Faculty planning requirements including the development of plans which outline objectives, targets and KPIs.
  • Engage with colleagues across Local Health Districts and teaching hospitals to ensure strong, collaborative relationships exist


  • Ensure accurate commercial, financial, and HR reporting and advice is provided to leaders within the Faculty to facilitate decision making.
  • Broker resources and services from central and embedded functions to ensure Faculty KPIs are achieved, including budget. Anticipate and mitigate challenges by monitoring and reporting KPIs and SLAs and provide estimates and feedback to ensure optimal planning of resources.


  • Lead change projects which focus on how Faculty outcomes can be improved.
  • Benchmark internally and externally and build collaborative relationships to stretch and expand opportunities for the Faculty and UNSW.
  • Work across UNSW to ensure that Faculty and UNSW incorporate the needs of students, industry partners and other external stakeholders.
  • Build a Faculty Professional staff people plan that is continually developed and delivered, working with HR to develop training, focussing on career development and performance management.

About you

You will have tertiary qualifications with extensive relevant experience in business administration and/or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. You will also have a high level of knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the higher education sector. Prior experience within the Health/Medicine sector is also highly desirable. The role also requires extensive people leadership, development, engagement and management experience as well as high skilled in influencing, communication, negotiation and networking to achieve organisational outcomes. Commercial acumen and a track record in setting and managing large scale budgets, meeting financial targets, and managing for financial sustainability is also key to being successful in this role.
