Job Purpose: The Faculty of Informatics & Design is looking to appoint a Faculty Language Coordinator on a 50% release basis for a period of five (5) years.

The purpose of the post is to promote good language practices through the implementation and coordination of strategies and projects to realize a conducive environment for teaching and learning by providing leadership and mentorship to support various Language and Transformation initiatives; to ensure compliance and enhancement in alignment with relevant institutional policies and strategies. The incumbent will also be responsible to monitor, review and report on all related activities in the faculty and provides administrative and development support to students and staff across the faculty.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • A relevant Doctoral Degree/PhD in Communication, Linguistics, Academic Literacy, Language Education or related field
  • At least four (4) years’ relevant experience in communication and/or language related field, two (2) of which must be in teaching in a higher education environment
  • Successful supervision of post-graduates to completion
  • A research record in the area of Linguistics (i.e publications in accredited journals, conference presentations)
  • Experience in programme and/or curriculum development
  • Ability to communicate in two regional languages, one of which must be English

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities:

  • Provide leadership to the faculty on language in higher and professional education
  • Plan and implement a Language development strategy for the Faculty
  • Coordinate Lecturing in professional communication across the Faculty
  • Coordinate and implement language development initiatives for staff
  • Coordinate and implement language development programmes for students
  • Coordinate and chair the faculty language committees meetings and report to Faculty Management
  • Promote and monitor the implementation of the Language Policy, institutional information literacy standards and process
  • Serve as the Faculty representative at all related institutional committees
  • Secure funding for language development interventions, manage and prepare the Faculty language budget
  • Participate in Quality assurance activities within the portfolio
  • Coordination of language staff within the Faculty
  • Liaison with all the language lecturers in the faculty about needs and support
  • Keep a Departmental academic workload (i.e lecture, supervise, research)
  • Perform other functions as may be assigned by Line Manager
