Above Scale salaries, i.e. a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position description

UNIT OVERVIEW

Center X in UCLA’s School of Education & Information Studies is accepting applications for Executive Director. Center X is one of the largest centers housed within the School of Education & Information Studies at UCLA and is an integral part of the research and implementation of educational innovation for the school. Center X houses UCLA’s Teacher Education Program, Principal Leadership Institute, and an array of professional development initiatives. It is a community of educators working to transform public schooling to create a more just, equitable, and humane society. This work involves: (1) supporting the learning of educators, from novices to accomplished practitioners; (2) partnering with schools, districts and communities, building on their strengths to help transform public schooling; (3) integrating research and practice to advance educational innovation and inform policy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Center X Executive Director is responsible for the administrative management and executive-level leadership for Center X. This includes program development, staffing and resource management, fundraising and grant management, long range strategic planning, and research management across two (2) graduate programs and fourteen (14) professional development projects. The Executive Director leads and embodies the mission and vision of Center X to transform public schooling that aims to create a just, equitable, and humane society. The Executive Director cultivates and develops relationships both within and outside UCLA to promote and carry out the mission of the Center. The Executive Director collaborates with faculty and staff across the School of Education & Information Studies (Ed&IS) in development of new initiatives and the continued growth of the Center. Center X employs approximately 140 academic and staff personnel (60 full-time and 80 part-time) and operates with a combined annual budget of approximately $29.5M (comprised of general, extramural, gift, and sales & service funds). The Executive Director works with the Faculty Director and Center personnel to create and support an on-going vision of transforming education while also advancing the mission and vision of UCLA’s School of Education & Information Studies. The Executive Director also has opportunities to teach in the Department of Education and participate in research activities.

Primary responsibilities of the Executive Director include:

  • Develop long-range and strategic visioning and planning with detailed objectives and goals with appropriate metrics to measure success. Establish both short and long range goals to meet the mission and vision of Center X.
  • Embody the mission and vision of Center X to transform public schooling and to create a just, equitable, and humane society. Analyze policy and stay abreast on educational innovation and research.
  • Effectively engage in fundraising and philanthropic activities for Center X.
  • Contribute to the creation of research plans, budgets and budget justifications for proposals and ensure adherence to University, federal and private foundation, and funding agency submission guidelines.
  • Develop and monitor the operational budget. Identify resource needs for purposes of Center operations. Identify funding sources and explore new revenue streams to meet program needs.
  • Liaise with the Ed&IS faculty, academic and administrative offices on various Center matters.
  • Identifies and solves problems decisively and effectively.
  • Make clear and well-informed decisions on various matters as they pertain to the Center operations.
  • Interact and develop relationships with state, district, school, and community partners.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to approximately 140 employees; proactively identify areas of development and opportunities for growth for direct reports and their subordinates; stay abreast of changing staffing policies and procedures; provide guidance and direction in Human Resources matters across the Center; play a supervisory role in relations to Centers’ senior staff.
  • Engage within local and statewide networks committed to educational justice, educator preparation and professional learning, and education policy.
  • Commit to the broader mission of the School of Education & Information Studies to build an equitable, diverse, inclusive, and just learning and working environment.
  • Teach courses as needed in departments and programs within Ed&IS.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • The appointee should have the terminal or top degree in the appointee’s field, e.g., Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., or the highest degree that is commonly expected in the field of Education or related field.
  • Deep commitment to actively addressing pervasive equity challenges in educator professional learning and PK-12 student learning, particularly in the greater Los Angeles area.
  • Prior experience in academic / research unit management, demonstrated research skills, and successful grant development.
  • Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills with emphasis on collaboration and the ability to maintain and establish working relationships with individuals at all levels.
  • Demonstrated competencies in fiscal and human resource development and budgeting.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures preferred.
