Purpose:


As the Schulich School of Business’ advancement leader, the Executive Director, Development and Alumni Relations (“ED”) will direct all fundraising, alumni, and community relations activities for the School, and report directly to the Dean of the Schulich School of Business, York University (“Schulich”).



Serving as a member of the Dean’s senior team, the ED will function in an advisory capacity to the Dean, sharing expertise on alumni relations, fundraising (annual, major gift, campaign, gift planning, etc.), special events, community relations, corporate relations and sponsorship matters. The ED will provide feedback on areas of priority and growth for the School through interactions with faculty, staff, students, and alumni.



The ED will provide strategic and operational leadership to a current team made up of 14 staff members working in the Office of Development & Alumni Relations (“DAR”). DAR is dedicated to serving the Schulich’s mission by leading, planning, and executing fundraising in the areas of student aid, capital projects, research, and support to improve the student experience. DAR is also responsible for all alumni engagement activities at Schulich. In support of the Schulich School of Business’ mission, DAR has as its core mission:


To build long-term and highly engaged relationships with stakeholders, including alumni, corporations, foundations, associations, government, and friends.
To leverage these relationships to support the mission and strategic objectives of the Schulich School of Business through charitable contributions, sponsorships, mentorship and other volunteerism and alumni outreach activities.



Publicly launched in 2016, Leading Change is Schulich’s most comprehensive fundraising and alumni engagement campaign to date. The Campaign is focused on five core pillars: campus expansion, student success, innovative thinking, research & discovery and alumni engagement. Currently in phase 2, the Campaign has a scheduled campaign close in 2021.



The ED collaborates closely with the various departments, faculty, staff and students of the School and the larger university, as well as many alumni volunteers and donors. The ED has overall responsibility for developing and executing a strategic fundraising plan that includes the individual, corporate and foundation sectors, as well as managing their own portfolio of prospects and donors. In addition, the ED will guide the strategic advancement of the Schulich Global Alumni Network, working with a team of alumni relations professionals and a network of senior volunteers.



The ED manages a team of professionals committed to excellence, transparency, agility, responsiveness and adaptiveness. The ED ensures DAR is focused on building a pipeline to support the School’s future growth and evolution, from both an engagement and philanthropic perspective, as well as expanding and enhancing an infrastructure for DAR that will have lasting impact.

 

Education:


A university degree is required, preferably accompanied by an additional graduate or professional degree. Evidence of ongoing upgrading of skills in communications, fundraising, leadership or marketing. Certified Fund Raising Executive certification desirable.

 

Experience:


A successful track record covering a minimum 10 years, with executive-level responsibility and leadership in all areas of development and alumni relations in a large and complex organization preferably higher education-focused. Demonstrated experience and success managing, motivating, and mentoring volunteers and advancement professionals, bringing out the best in teams and individuals. Highly knowledgeable and experienced in both new and traditional channels of revenue generation.

Ability to constantly assess risk mitigating strategies to optimize results due to the complexities of stakeholder engagement. Advanced level of acuity to anticipate and synthesize impact of decisions made. Exceptional management skills. Experience working with senior leadership and community volunteers in both private and public organizations. Track record of effectively managing and supervising large budgets and complex projects. Demonstrated success in the identification, cultivation and direct personal solicitation of significant major gifts. Knowledge of the Canadian, and key global markets, philanthropic environment, legislation and available charitable gift vehicles. A history of managing a portfolio of principal gift and campaign prospects and meeting individual and organizational targets. An exceptional relationship manager - able to cultivate and nurtur
