Position Summary


The Office of University Life was created in 2015 to develop and enhance the University-wide student experience at Columbia University. Working in collaboration with students, faculty and staff throughout Columbia's many undergraduate and graduate schools, we serve as the hub for University-wide student life information and initiatives and work to enhance policies, strengthen resources and support community across Columbia.


Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Director of Special Projects is responsible for developing, implementing and leading new and ongoing projects and initiatives that support the Office of University Life's mission and for working on executive communications for the Executive Vice President for University Life.


The scope of this role includes content development and implementation, consultation with stakeholders and content experts, and responsibility for moving complex projects forward carefully and efficiently. The right candidate takes an analytical and pragmatic approach to problem-solving, communicates clearly and effectively with many audiences, and works collaboratively with team members and leadership to drive projects forward to successful completion.


Responsibilities


Manages the implementation, administration and evaluation of key special projects and initiatives for the Office of University Life with guidance from Office leadership, including projects related to University Life core areas of student well-being, mental health, gender-based misconduct prevention and inclusion and belonging. Coordinates this work across the Office's functional areas, including student life and engagement, communications and operations. Serves a project launch consultant to various teams across the Office.
Works closely with Chief of Staff to lead planning, development and implementation of special projects, including: planning, agenda-development and staffing working groups and committees; tracking and completing meeting follow-up; creating and adhering to project budgets, plans, timelines and production schedules; trouble-shooting as needed; and keeping plans and schedules up to date.


Communicates with relevant stakeholders and keeps stakeholders and others engaged or apprised as needed.


Conducts research and analysis and prepares presentations, memos and reports for a range of constituents in and outside of University Life.


Manages programmatic planning of Awakening Our Democracy, University Life's signature event series on pressing issues of day. Works closely with the Director for Student Life and Engagement to plan and execute these events successfully.


Partners with University Life leadership to define and implement a wide range of strategic projects and initiatives to support core programs and further the mission of the Office.


Additional duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years of relevant experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience required.


Preferred Qualifications


The right candidate will be an excellent writer and a clear thinker who is detail-oriented and has a strong understanding of how to move projects forward in a complex environment with multiple internal and external stakeholders. Must enjoy logistics coordination and management of varied responsibilities and understand how to leverage resources for maximum visibility and impact. Strong project management skills with demonstrated ability to work independently and also collaboratively, to track and manage multiple projects simultaneously, and to meet internal and external deadlines. The right candidate is patient, solutions-oriented, and discrete. They always exercise sound judgment and maintain a sense of humor, and must enjoy working in a fast-paced environment. Must be flexible and willing to serve as project executor, leader and thought partner as appropriate.
