Director of Social Work
University of Manchester
United Kingdom

Job Description

Right now is Manchester’s time to shine.  We are currently preparing to launch our first ever major fundraising and volunteering campaign.  And we’re making plans to mark our university’s 200th anniversary.

At Manchester we don’t just focus on what we’re good at.  We ask what we’re good for.

Through our teaching we are educating a new kind of socially responsible graduate – tomorrow’s thinkers, doers and leaders of a better world. Through our research we are addressing the most pressing global challenges with bold and brilliant solutions. Through innovation we are turning ideas into reality, creating the jobs and industries that will sustain us in the future. And in the heart of the city and beyond, we are breaking down barriers to art, science and learning to build stronger, more resilient communities.

Manchester people are different. Not only do we share the values of integrity, being bold, being ambitious, and being collaborative, but we also share a pioneering spirit and the courage to make a difference. The Head of Transformational Philanthropy is an opportunity for you to make this kind of impact at Manchester.

We have a track record of success in principal gifts.  Most recently in February this year, the Global Development Institute received a transformational donation of £2 million from the Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Foundation. The gift will deliver an ambitious programme of work aimed at redefining the role of global development research in the 21st Century. The donation aims to build equitable partnerships between the GDI, one of the foremost development studies research institutions globally, and Universities across the developing world.

The Deputy Director, Development is a critical leadership position within the Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DDAR) office.  You will lead the major giving, regular giving, development communications and donor relations teams (28 staff in total).  Collaborating closely with senior academic leaders and leading a talented team are key highlights of this role.

Working at the most senior levels across the University, you will be a pivotal member of DDAR’s Senior Management Team and will also deputise for the Director.  Your efforts will be instrumental in advancing our campaign which is currently in its quiet phase.  The campaign is the first of its kind in Manchester’s history and will expand on existing initiatives to amplify the University’s reach and impact – engaging new audiences and involving our entire community in fundraising and volunteer efforts.

Research and teaching at Manchester are vital in solving some of the most pressing global issues - sustainability and climate change, economic development and inequalities, health and AI are just a few.  We are Europe’s top university for action on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and ranked second globally in this area.  Social responsibility underpins our research, combining expertise across disciplines to deliver pioneering solutions to the world’s most urgent problems.

As Deputy Director, Development, you will lead the strategic planning and delivery for major giving, regular giving, development communications and donor relations.  You’ll set ambitious objectives for teams and individuals, support and inspire their achievement, and champion individual growth.  You will provide support and crucial strategic guidance to University leaders, academics, and fundraising colleagues across the University.

Great things happen at Manchester because of the work that we do.  The team here are passionate, creative, and ambitious individuals who are dedicated to our work as well as to supporting each other. This is an opportunity to make an impact and take on new challenges, making your mark both at the University of Manchester and in your career.
