The mission of UCI MIND is to engage in cutting edge, interdisciplinary research designed to discover the basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration and brain aging, characterize the transition from normal aging to Alzheimer’s disease, and develop new treatments to slow or eliminate cognitive impairment resulting from any etiology. Critical to this mission are dissemination of research findings to the community for the purpose of increasing public confidence and participation in translational research. The Director of Scientific Communications will have key roles in engaging and educating the public through outreach activities, development and delivery of educational presentations, marketing and communications including social media, and developing and maintaining community relationships and partnerships. The successful candidate will be immediately responsible for 1) developing written communications on behalf of the Institute (newsletters, website / blogs, social media posts, etc.); 2) development/delivery of community educational presentations; 3) managing all UCI MIND community education/outreach activities, including planning/oversight of the annual research conferences; 4) developing and maintaining community relationships and partnerships; 5) hosting programming such as live scientific program broadcast on the web and social media; 6) performing research on research recruitment and retention; 7) analyzing data, writing, editing, and submitting work to peer reviewed journals and 8) overseeing junior staff members and trainees. Requirements Successful candidates must have graduate training ( PhD) in Neuroscience, Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related area. We are especially interested in applicants with proficiency in the following areas: • Strong communications skills, including scientific writing, writing for a lay audience, and public presentations • Knowledge of dementia in its different forms • Ability to independently develop the content and creatively format presentations regarding Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias to make them both understandable and attractive to audiences • Demonstrated interest in working with the older people and people with cognitive impairment • Knowledge of Orange County community organizations committed to service for people with dementia • Experience in data collection and analysis for documenting education outcomes, including, but not limited to, attendance, evaluations, and recruitment of research participants • Strong writing skills, including scientific writing and writing for lay audiences • Ability to establish and maintain accurate files and records • Experience in developing and cultivating new community and professional contacts primarily in the Alzheimer’s disease and dementia profession • Experience representing the mission and programs of an organization in public venues (e.g., health fairs) • Experience describing the benefits of Alzheimer’s disease research participation to the public and successfully facilitating enrollment Candidates must be able to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams and to manage projects within a complex organization; therefore, excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills are essential. The ability to communicate in non-English languages would be viewed favorably. This position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate.
