The Penn State Eberly College of Science’s Office of Science Outreach is seeking a creative, dynamic professional who has a passion for science and creating unforgettable science experiences for the public to fill the position of Director. The Director of the Office of Science Outreach reports directly to the Associate Dean of Administration and manages a team of four staff members. Primary responsibilities include: Providing strategic direction and setting goals for college outreach programs; managing a budget of ~$250K; developing, implementing, and managing outreach program offerings and broader impact initiatives in collaboration with faculty and partnering units; interpreting and administering outreach policies and procedures and conducting analyses; and supervising, hiring, and training full-time, part-time, and volunteer staff and students. Works with the college’s Office of Communications to create and produce marketing plans and materials for outreach programs to include efforts to increase the participation of underserved and diverse populations in science outreach programs and opportunities. Oversees the Science Outreach website and other social media efforts. Actively participate with the University's Youth Programs Council. Represent the Eberly College of Science to the public, media, industry, and the community so that outreach programs are seen as a valuable and positive asset to the university and the commonwealth. The Director implements and administers the Science-U summer camp program to include the camp infrastructure, programming, application, and registration processes. This includes the hiring, training, and maintenance of approximately 75 part-time and volunteer positions annually and conducting camper, camp staff and parent assessments of the programs. Solicits and hires faculty and other education professionals to write/design summer camp curriculum. Seeks funding through grant writing. This job will be filled as a level 2 or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. The successful candidate will possess exemplary organizational, interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, and have experience managing budgets, writing grants, and hiring and supervising staff in multiple capacities. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire with an excellent possibility of re-funding.
