The Department of Surgery at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine seeks to recruit a full-time academic position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Regular/In-Residence series. This position will be at 50% Regular (Ladder) and 50% In-Residence appointment. The position is designed to attract someone willing and able to build, grow, and lead a Metabolic Research Center in collaboration with the division of Foregut, Metabolic, and General surgery (FMG). The successful candidate will report to the Chair of the Department of Surgery.

The selected candidate will be the Director of the Surgery Metabolic Research Center. The individual will work closely within the Department of Surgery and collaborate with other departments, research centers, and institutes at UC Davis. The individual will lead the efforts to advance scholarship and practice related to areas such as human nutrition, analysis of Big Data, interaction with governmental agencies such as USDA, microbiome and xeno-metabolome analysis, and nutritional biology. The individual will be expected to promote the educational mission by mentoring a diverse multidisciplinary team of investigators as well as participating in curriculum development for trainees and junior faculty. The successful candidate will have substantial opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and will be expected to build the Metabolic Research Center in a way that leverages the strengths of UC Davis in comparative effectiveness research, as well as the Department of Surgery’s core surgical clinical trials data coordinating center.

Applicants must be at the Associate or Full Professor level or near promotion to that level. They must have a proven track record of leadership and mentorship, be able to demonstrate a record of scholarship, and have evidence of successful extramural multidisciplinary funding. Experience working with physicians and leading teams is essential.

Candidates must possess a MD or PhD in Nutrition Science or related field. Teaching, research, university and public service is required. The ability to manage and support post-doctoral scholars and other trainees is expected. All candidates must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment.

Applicants must also have leadership experience at the Associate Director, co-Director or Director level. Cross appointments with other Divisions or Departments will be explored at the preference of the candidate. Experience with local, state, and federal agencies and entities is preferred.
