HiLIFE, Helsinki Institute of Life Science, is a leading life science research institute in the Nordics. HiLIFE was established in 2017 and builds on existing strengths and new recruits and partnerships to create an attractive international environment for solving grand challenges in health and environment. HiLIFE supports outstanding research and generation of innovations across the University’s campuses within partner faculties and its own units, the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland FIMM, the Institute of Biotechnology and Neuroscience Center. HiLIFE also coordinates research infrastructures in life sciences and provides research-based interdisciplinary training. In 2019 HiLIFE has a staff of 600 and budget of 59 M€.

We are now seeking candidates for the position of

Director of HiLIFE


Appointed by the Rector of the University of Helsinki, the Director of HiLIFE provides enthusiastic, inspiring and clear leadership to HiLIFE as a spearhead of the University’s life science strategic research area and as a partner to the faculties of University of Helsinki. The Director has overall responsibility of operations according to the University Regulations and HiLIFE Rules of Procedure and he/she prepares topics for the HiLIFE board.


The Director will encourage and develop cross-faculty collaboration between life science units across the University, emphasizing high quality interdisciplinary research and teaching and further strengthening the University’s international links in life science. A key factor for success will be close cooperation with other leaders within life science at the University, identifying areas of strength and working constructively across all life sciences areas.


The Director will be appointed initially for a term of 5 years with the possibility of renewal based on evaluation. The salary is negotiable within the salary system of Finnish universities. The appointee will assume the position at the latest in January 1, 2020. A six-month trial period will be applied.


Qualifications and experience


Candidates for the position think strategically, are innovative, have a global mind-set and solid people skills. Strong candidates have outstanding leadership capabilities and demonstrable experience of leading interdisciplinary work and complex structures in life science with excellent collaboration, communication and change agility skills.


Candidates show a strong commitment to a broad base of interdisciplinary research in life science, and have a clear familiarity with international and emerging trends in life science in addition to having a strong personal track record of research and funding in any area of life science. The appointee must hold a doctoral degree and have the skills to serve as an academic leader. To attend successfully to the duties of the position, the appointee must be fluent in English. Proficiency in Finnish or Swedish is useful, but not necessary.
