Poche Centre for Indigenous Health

The Poche Centre for Indigenous Health at The University of Queensland (UQ) was established following a $10 million donation to UQ from Mr Greg Poche AO and Mrs Kay van Norton Poche. The Centre is part of the national Poche Indigenous Health Network, together with Poche Centres at the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, the University of Western Australia and Flinders University in Adelaide and Alice Springs. 

The UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health has an urban Indigenous health focus. It addresses two key challenges and concentrates UQ’s Indigenous and health expertise towards:

  1. Developing a skilled and available workforce, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to respond to the challenges in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health; and 
  2. Improving urban Indigenous health outcomes across the life course.

The First Peoples Urban Health Research Alliance

The First Peoples Urban Health Research Alliance is a joint initiative between Metro North Hospital and Health Service (MNHHS), the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) and the UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health.  Under the leadership of Professor James Ward, the Alliance is the first of its kind in Australia, established to substantially accelerate Australia’s progress towards closing the gap in life expectancy and achieving health equality for urban First Peoples in greater Brisbane north by ensuring the whole of health care system is responsive to the health and wellbeing needs of First Peoples.

The Alliance will lead world class research and evaluation and knowledge translation pursuits, alongside a focus on building research capabilities and capacity within the health care system. Through these activities, the Alliance will enable a health care system to deliver high value, person-centred healthcare and quality of life for First Peoples who access health care, and who live within the region. The Alliance will operate with underlying principles of working at systems wide level with strength-based approaches, collaboration and coordination, cultural safety and self-determination.

About This Opportunity

This is a conjoint position between UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health, Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences and Metro North Hospital and Health Service (MNHHS). An opportunity exists to support Professor James Ward, Director of UQ’s Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and lead of Urban First Peoples Health Research Alliance. The Director of Data and Evaluation position will develop, implement and evaluate services, programs and policies and a culturally-safe workforce to close the gap in life expectancy of the First Peoples population that it services.

This position will be responsible for developing and leading a sustainable program of research and knowledge translation in the area of focused on First Peoples (but not exclusively) working in the public health and primary health care systems on workforce development, career pathways and translation of evidence into practice with a primary outcome to improve health services, programs and policies related to urban First Peoples.

This position will also provide leadership in both organisations with a responsibility for developing and implementing research strategies, building research capability and capacity and demonstrating impact. The appointee will be expected to recruit and supervise research higher degree students and embed research within teaching and practice.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful for this opportunity, you will have completed a PhD in the relevant discipline area. You will have a demonstrated understanding of issues in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples health care. You will have a sustained record of outstanding impact and achievement in research in the disciplinary area partnered with international recognition and an excellent record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.

You will have the ability to successfully lead a research team, with an excellent record of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing significant external research funding from institutional and commercial sources. You will hold an extensive record of supervision of HDR students and have a strong record of meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with evidence of leadership in external activities. Well-developed communication, interpersonal and consultative skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from a multidisciplinary background is also essential.

What We Can Offer

This is a fixed-term, full time 2 year position at Academic Level D

At Academic Level D, base salary will be in the range $146,824 - $161,756, plus super of up to 17%. The total package will be in the range $171,784 - $189,254.
