Director in International Office
University of Leeds
United Kingdom

Director, International Office

The University of Leeds is one of the largest and most prestigious institutions in the UK. It is host to a truly global community, with more than 39,000 students from 170 different countries, over 9,000 staff of 100 different nationalities, and more than 281,000 alumni in 190 different countries. Now is an exciting time to join the University as Professor Simone Buitendijk became the new Vice-Chancellor in September 2020. In February 2021 the University launched its new strategy for 2020-2030 “Universal Values, Global Change” which sets the backdrop against which this post will operate.

Leeds’ vision is to be a truly international university with global reach and impact through internationally relevant, accessible, high-quality education and world-changing research and innovation. In order to achieve this, the Director, International Office will drive the International Strategy which focuses on the following themes:

  • Foster and embed an international mindset across all aspects of our activity.
  • Continue to build, engage and support our globally connected community of staff, students and alumni.
  • Create global partnerships that provide international learning and research opportunities to develop engaged global citizens and world-changing research and innovation.
  • Clearly, this is an exciting opportunity for an individual with a proven track record in global engagement. Reporting to the Director of Marketing and accountable to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hai-Sui Yu, the Director, International Office will be responsible for a dynamic portfolio of activities, including: international student recruitment, collaboration and partnership development for Student Education, Research and Innovation, and international profile building.

From a skills perspective, candidates should have a rich understanding of the global education landscape and the complexities of the international external environment. They should be experienced in translating these factors into meaningful objectives for the institution and also have the wherewithal to engage with colleagues across the breadth of the University’s work. Whilst being a credible external ambassador is important, there is also a significant managerial aspect to the post and so the new Director, International Office will need to be a strong people manager, who can question and challenge, influence colleagues, lead change and achieve results. Equally, they should be adept at balancing priorities and galvanising colleagues in pursuit of such an ambitious strategy.
