The University of Washington Tacoma’s School of Education announces an opening for a full-time Director of the Educational Administration Program to start in the 2021-2022 academic year with faculty rank of Professor of Practice. The Educational Administration program prepares P-12 principals and program administrators to center equity, ethics, and critical reflection as leaders who positively impact the lives of diverse communities, families, and learners. The expected start date is around June 2021 and will be negotiated with the Dean.

Faculty Description for Professor of Practice:

Faculty rank for this position will be at the level of Professor of Practice. This rank is not tenured and will not be tenure-eligible, tenure-leading, or tenure track. See UW Faculty Code Section 24-34B-5 for more information about this rank. The service period for this position is the nine (9) month academic year (September 16th - June 15th) but may be eligible for additional compensation when working in the summer months.

 Below is a general summary of key duties of full-time Professors of Practice at UW Tacoma specific to this Director role:

  1. The Director will teach 4-5 courses on a reduced load (7-8 courses is the standard load for this rank) during the regular academic year (September-June) in areas of expertise and based on the needs of the program and/or school. The Director may also teach 1-2 courses in summer for additional compensation.
  2. Actively participate in accreditation, assessment, curriculum development, program review, and related activities to assist the school with its ongoing continuous-improvement efforts.
  3. Service expectations to the school, campus, and relevant external bodies will include:
    • Co-chairing the Educational Leadership Professional Educators Advisory Board with the EdD Director (part of role).
    • Serving on school-wide, campus, and UW committees as needed.
    • Building and maintaining mutually beneficial external relations with local communities, PK-12 school partners, and state-level organizations to ensure the program remains well-connected to current issues of professional practice.
    • Advising and mentoring undergraduate, master’s, and/or doctoral students.

Note: there are no research or scholarship expectations for this rank.

Administrative Role Description: The Director will have compensated responsibilities for program administration throughout the calendar year through administrative course release time and administrative supplement/excess compensation. Major responsibilities for this position include coordinating various efforts as related to accreditation and program reviews; course scheduling; leading curriculum revisions in alignment with professional and state standards; enrollment management including actively recruiting students representing diverse backgrounds; recruiting, evaluating, and supporting field supervisors and part-time lecturers; partnership development in collaboration with the Dean and Director of Field Placements & Partnerships with school districts, state-level agencies, and various advisory boards to assure the program is well connected to current issues of professional practice; and monitoring students’ progress from admissions through program completion including resolving student concerns in an equitable timely manner. The Director will also oversee the supervision of principal internships.


Educational Administration Program

UW Tacoma’s one-year Educational Administration certification program is one of the most successful principal preparation programs in the state with a model of concurrent instruction and internship. The focus on inclusive leadership, ethical administration, and excellence in supervision of curriculum and instruction has a focus on change agency and promoting equity in complex school environments, particularly in improving services for diverse communities and populations. Required Qualifications:

  1. Earned master’s degree (or a foreign equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher education in the areas of educational administration, leadership, or a related field, with an emphasis in P-12 education by the time of hire. Terminal degree from an accredited institution is strongly preferred.  
  2. Broad knowledge of school leadership and successful experience in P-12 settings. 
  3. Evidence of successful building/school-level, district-level, and/or regional educational leadership experience in P-12 settings.
  4. Clear track record as an equity and social justice advocate through initiatives to improve educational outcomes for a diverse community of educators and learners.

    • Note: three professional letters of recommendation will be required for all individuals who accept invitations as finalists. Those who are ABD will specifically need 1 letter from the dissertation committee chair to verify time-line for program completion.
