The Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations (LPO) at Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University invites applications for the position of an open-rank, non-tenure Professor of the Practice and Director of the Independent School Leadership (ISL) Program.

The ISL program fosters leaders who understand the complex educational, political, social, fiscal, and moral dimensions of independent schools, and who are able to propel their schools to high levels of achievement. The primary responsibility of this appointment is to redesign and administer the master’s level ISL program by developing a hybrid version of the program that will expand access to and enrollment in the ISL program. The vision for the new M.Ed. program is to blend in-person instruction on campus that could take place throughout the academic year and summer session with online instruction (synchronous and/or asynchronous). The new ISL program director will also work with the Peabody College Dean’s Office and LPO to develop an ISL track in the online Leadership and Learning in Organizations (LLO) Ed.D. program. The ISL program director will also teach core courses in the ISL program and potentially teach in other undergraduate and graduate programs in the department.

At Peabody, the role of Practice Faculty is centered at the nexus of research and practice; practice line faculty work across the boundaries of research, policy, and practice to advance the field through applied scholarship. As such, we seek a faculty member who is an accomplished teacher, thinker, and collaborator. The concomitant responsibilities of the practice faculty appointment include department service activities such as leading the review of applications for program admissions, serving on search committees, and participating in faculty reviews. Practice faculty are also expected to contribute scholarly work in the faculty member’s given field that is accessible to the larger educational community of practice.


Candidates must have a doctorate in a relevant field, experience in independent school administration, experience in teaching (both in-person and online is preferred), and scholarly contributions to relevant fields in the theory and practice of independent school leadership. Candidates should submit: a cover letter detailing their relevant education and experience, a CV, a syllabus of a course the candidate has taught, three names of references, and a video example of the candidate’s instruction.
