Remuneration: $146,709 pa HEW 10A (plus 17% employer superannuation) and an annual incentive payment of up to a maximum of 10%, at the discretion of the University

The Opportunity

The External Relations, Development and Alumni portfolio (ERDA) works collaboratively across the University to initiate, grow and steward strong person to person relationships with key stakeholders that support Monash University’s research and education endeavours. Their work delivers outcomes that significantly enhance the University’s profile and resources. The launch of the Change it. For good. Campaign, with goals of raising $500m from 50,000 donors and doubling the number of bequests made to the University, signals a new scale of ambition for the University to inspire our community to effect positive and lasting change through Monash. 

The division sits within the Office of the President and Vice-Chancellor. To fulfil their mission, ERDA oversees a range of activities including fundraising, alumni relations, external engagement, donor programs, and community engagement activities for the University, nationally and internationally.

Based in our newly built Chancellery Building at our ever-vibrant Clayton Campus and reporting to an engaging and supportive Director - Development (Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and the Monash Business School), the Deputy Director, Development (HASS) is responsible for fundraising and donor engagement initiatives, targeting philanthropic gifts at the $100k level and above. The role requires a proactive and donor-centric approach to philanthropic income generation to meet annual income targets and realise gifts of institutional significance and scale.

This role is a core appointment to the Development team within the External Relations, Development and Alumni (ERDA) division, however is an external-facing position and the incumbent will spend a significant amount of time with donors (alumni and non-alumni) and prospective donors, as well working closely with senior faculty colleagues and stakeholders to achieve faculty goals and objectives.

About You

The successful applicant will have a relevant postgraduate qualification with substantial demonstrated success in development work in a fundraising/marketing context, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education/training and skills.

Along with the above, a few key skills ERDA are also looking for are applicants with:

  • Exceptional oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to effectively engage and inspire a wide range of interested parties, individuals and other key stakeholders and ability to persuade them to commit to a cause

  • A proven ability to plan, generate and execute innovative fundraising and relationship management strategies across the full spectrum of current stakeholders, alumni, potential new donors and other interested parties

  • Demonstrated strategic capability in leading, managing and delivering a broad range of alumni and fundraising functions in line with strategic objectives with a demonstrated success in major and principal gifts, 

  • A demonstrated track record of requesting and gaining financial commitment from philanthropic and other donor groups, including industry and; A demonstrated ability to successfully manage direct reports and lead teams
