Department Administrator

The Department of Zoology is seeking a new Department Administrator. This leadership position reports to the Head of Department, and combines the functions of Chief Operating Officer and Head of Administration. As Department Administrator, you will directly manage eight reports and will have responsibility for all professional services staff (c.60) who provide services in HR, finance, research and teaching support, buildings and facilities, committees, internal and external communications, compliance and other operational areas. You will advise the Head of Department, and other senior academic staff, on strategy, planning and policy issues and options. The role requires close collaboration with other departments in the School of the Biological Sciences, and with colleagues in the university's central administration.


Zoology is a large and diverse Department with an outstanding record in research and teaching. Our research ranges across animal biology from cell biology to conservation policy. We have a reputation as a friendly and supportive Department. We are based on the New Museums Site in the city centre and we are home to the newly-reopened Museum of Zoology in the David Attenborough Building.


The Department Administrator will have experience of management and administration in a complex organization. They will have skills in team leadership, problem-solving, change management, planning, resource management, contributing to strategy, and working effectively with staff, students and external stakeholders.
