Allston Burr Resident Dean School Faculty of Arts and Sciences Department/Area Dean of Students, Harvard College Position Description Harvard College is a residential college comprising four areas of the first-year Yard and 12 upper-level Houses and the non-residential Dudley Community. Each of the 12 upper-level Houses employs an Allston Burr Resident Dean, who serves as the dean of students under the direction of the Faculty Deans and the Dean of Harvard College. The Resident Dean is responsible for the academic progress and personal welfare of the undergraduate students in the House. The Resident Dean represents students at the Administrative Board and Honor Council; works with departments on academic issues affecting individual students; and teaches one course per semester in an FAS department. Like the Faculty Deans, the Resident Dean provides friendly guidance and support through meals in the House dining hall, participation in House activities, office hours, and student interaction. The Allston Burr Resident Dean’s primary responsibility is to foster the academic progress and personal welfare of the undergraduates in one Harvard House, which accommodates between 400-550 students. The Resident Dean works closely with Faculty Deans, the Dean of Students, the Administrative Board and Honor Council, the House Staff, Counseling and Mental Health Services, University Health Services, and various offices within the Office of Undergraduate Education including the Academic Resource Center and Accessible Education Office. The Resident Dean is a member of the Administrative Board of Harvard College, which meets weekly during term time to consider undergraduate petitions for exceptions to College rules, as well as unsatisfactory academic records and matters of College discipline. The Resident Dean plays a critical role in both individual and community crisis management and in-House disciplinary incidents. Basic Qualifications Doctorate required. Must be qualified to teach as a Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Additional Qualifications Ability to advise and counsel undergraduate students about academic opportunities and support resources, interest and experience in academic administration and student life, and excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Preference will be given to candidates who have taught undergraduates and have worked in a residential environment. Applicants should also be familiar with residential crisis management and disciplinary responsibilities. Successful candidates in the past have brought a variety of life and work experiences to the position.
