Summary

 

Responsible for the oversight of the collection of umbilical cord blood units and related procedural paperwork and documents for the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank (CCBB) at their specific site. Be involved in promotion of public cord blood banking, education of the mother/donor, data collection, and other necessary operational requirements for the successful collection of umbilical cord blood units for public banking and directed donation.

 

Major Responsibilities

  • Oversee the general operation of the site and staff working at that site. Plan and manage monthly site schedule. Perform site supervision.
  • Be an ambassador for the CCBB program. Establish good working relationships with hospital personnel involved in the cord blood collection process. Develop and enhance all aspects of CCBB with the goal of promoting public cord blood banking. Make presentations to hospital staff and community groups to increase awareness of CCBB.
  • Educate potential mothers/donors about public cord blood banking, so that they can make an informed choice regarding the donation of their infant’s cord blood.
  • Assist site staff to obtain informed consent from mother/donor by providing information and discussion of the consent form, culminating with a written and signed document.
  • Obtain a detailed medical history from mother/donors following delivery and informed consent. Record information on Medical History Form and accurately enter information into CCBB database.
  • Obtain delivery and neonatal information by reviewing the medical records of the mother and infant donor, and accurately record information on the appropriate form, performing follow up with OB clinical staff when needed. Enter collection and donor information in the CCBB data systems.
  • Perform final reviews on all paperwork leaving the collection site, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all recorded information before it is delivered to the CCBB.
  • Collect the umbilical cord blood from either the delivered or the undelivered placenta according to collection procedures and deliver to the cord blood processing laboratory for processing and storage.
  • Ensure delivery of the informed consent, medical history, and delivery information forms to the CCBB laboratory and administrative offices for verification and inclusion into the cord blood unit files.
  • Ensure that maternal blood samples are collected by the collection site phlebotomist according to standard operating procedures. If samples are missed or are otherwise unusable, facilitate the collection of new samples.
  • Educate and advise site personnel on the most effective collection techniques
  • Ensure supplies are readily available at the site for site personnel to collect the umbilical cord according to collection procedures.
  • Prepare the collected umbilical cord blood for delivery to the cord blood processing laboratory for processing and storage.
  • Ensure and maintain complete confidentiality with regard to identity of the maternal/infant donor pair, as well as results of any tests and procedures, in accordance with CCBB standard operating procedures.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education

Completion of an Associate's degree

 

Experience

 

Work requires a minimum of two years of relevant research experience. A Bachelor's degree may substitute for 2 years required experience.
