Accessible Experiential Learning Coordinator

An important part of post-secondary education is access to career and experiential learning opportunities for all students. Experiential learning programs expose students to practical skill development, leadership opportunities, and valuable work experience. It is the role of the Accessible Experiential Learning Coordinator to help students develop these skills and tools so that they are prepared for employment upon graduation. The intended benefits are to increase skill development and practical experience for students with disabilities, increase student satisfaction and confidence entering the workforce, and to support students in their career decision making and successful transitions from university to meaningful work.

The Accessible Experiential Coordinator (Coordinator) will work within Career and Experiential Learning (CEL) department that includes a Chairperson, faculty members and CUPE staff. The Coordinator will work with CEL faculty to identify new experiential learning opportunities on and off-campus for students with disabilities and work collaboratively with the Accessibilities department to expand career and experiential learning opportunities for students. The Coordinator will be an advocate for career and experiential learning, leveraging internal expertise and utilizing resources and relationships that have been built by CEL team over the past 25 years.

Experiential Learning Strategy:

• Support the development of experiential learning for students with disabilities by working with faculty members and staff across campus and via the Open Learning division.
• Coordinate with other TRU Faculties and Schools to ensure students with disabilities have access to experiential learning opportunities such as work-study, mentorship, career related resources and expertise.
• Collaborate with campus partners to share best practices and engage in pan-campus experiential learning initiatives.

Experiential Learning Support:

• Contribute to the annual report that highlights accessible experiential learning on campus.
• Attend on-campus and community events to promote career and experiential learning opportunities for TRU students with disabilities.
• Work with the CEL marketing committee and Faculty of Student Development marketing staff to highlight experiential learning within TRU and with external stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with community partners to create and enhance high impact experiential learning experiences.
• Recruit students with disabilities to participate in experiential learning, determine what types of jobs students are interested in gaining experience in and facilitate experiences in those areas.
• Create and administer surveys and focus groups of current students registered with Accessibility Services to identify their career goals, barriers to employment, lack of applications, barriers to accessing work-terms, and methods to improve Co-op programming.
• Assist with other duties and workload assignments as assigned by the Chair in a collegial environment.

Job Development / Partnership Development:

• Target specific industry and occupations as critical areas for exploration and benefit.
• Educate employers on the benefits of partnering with the Career & Experiential Learning Department and accessibility initiatives.
• Work with employers to set up accessible work situations for students, including accommodations and alternate formats for both employers and students in entering experiential learning settings.


  • Master’s degree is preferred, however specific experience in the accessibility field will be considered
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience working with students with a disability and accessibility
  • Minimum 3 years' experience relevant to the Career Education and Experiential Learning field
  • Demonstrated instructional skills and experience in a post-secondary setting
  • Knowledge of regional, provincial, national and international labour markets
  • Superior time management, written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with diverse populations (including students, employers, faculty, deans, administrators and alumni)
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to use web-authoring and database programs
