Position description

The Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks a skilled leader with experience at the intersection of environmental education, equity, justice, and building healthy communities to contribute to and support the Learning & Teaching Group’s environmental literacy projects. The Learning & Teaching Group focuses on capacity building in formal (e.g., school districts, community colleges, and universities) and informal (e.g., museums, aquariums, science centers, outdoor science organizations) education systems, in support of developing science and environmental literacy, including the widespread implementation of Next Generation Science Standards. The Learning & Teaching Group is committed to leading with equity, inclusion, and cultural relevance at the center of all work. The Learning & Teaching Group’s environmental literacy portfolio supports improvement efforts in outdoor and environmental education nationally and internationally by promoting equity, inclusion, and cultural relevance; translating research about effective practices for teaching and learning into accessible approaches, resources, and tools for program leaders and instructors; and building community with partners in the field.

The Coordinator of Environmental Literacy will contribute at a leadership level to the Lawrence’s portfolio of projects related to environmental literacy, including the BEETLES Project, the in-development Elizabeth and Robert Karplus Outdoor Nature Lab, the Working Towards Racial Equity national 2-year workshop series, and others. The Coordinator of Environmental Literacy will report to the Director of Environmental Literacy Programs and work closely with the Learning & Teaching Group, the Research & Impact Group, Learning Labs, Visitor and Community Experiences, as well as external collaborators and partners.

Key Responsibilities:
The Coordinator of Environmental Literacy will work with various stakeholders to:
-Provide support to informal outdoor science organizations and school districts (e.g., professional learning, capacity building, curriculum design or implementation, leadership development, document review, discussion facilitation, hiring practices, and survey analysis) related to student-centered and nature-centered teaching and learning, and equity, inclusion, cultural relevance.
-Write, review, and revise resources, including professional learning materials and student activities, with particular attention to organizational systems, scientific accuracy, and teaching strategies that are research-based and inclusive, equitable, and culturally relevant.
-Contribute to research, practitioner publications, grant proposals and reports.
-Represent Lawrence Hall of Science locally, regionally, and nationally at conferences and professional meetings
-Coordinate and manage multiple projects and facilitate meetings with multiple stakeholders and deliverables, while ensuring an explicit approach to equity, inclusion, and cultural relevance in all project activities
-Coordinate and contribute to some or all of the following projects: Outdoor Nature Lab, BEETLES, and Working Towards Racial Equity.



Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent international degree)

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Minimum 3 years working experience

Preferred qualifications

-Minimum 3 years working experience in outdoor science, environmental justice, education, and/or in a position focused on advocating for and building towards equity.
-Experience working with or in communities of color, low-income communities, or other communities underrepresented in science and environmental fields.
-Demonstrated understanding of issues and challenges in science and outdoor science education, including experience with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
-Experience developing curriculum and/or professional learning materials.
-Environmental education or other outdoor or science teaching experience.
-Experience conducting professional learning for educators.
-Experience contributing to grant proposals and/or published works.
-Evidence of ability to advocate for equity, inclusion, and cultural relevance within one or more of the following areas: curriculum and professional learning materials, student and professional learning experiences, organizational systems, or workplace team dynamics.
-Experience coordinating small teams, multiple projects, and ongoing deliverables over a long period of time.
-Evidence of open-mindedness, continuous learning, creativity, vision, flexibility.
-Science content knowledge and understanding of research about learning and teaching
