Position Title: 

Communications Officer (COM2A)

 

Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Senior Director, Institutional Communications, the Communications Officer promotes a positive image of the University to the public, especially via the media. Stays abreast of, and reports on, news and issues at the University. Connects with researchers, administrators and other members of the community for information, in order to respond to queries. Researches, develops, writes and distributes press releases and other communications materials about the University. Reaches out to the media via both traditional and new media channels.

 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Conceive, write and edit materials for print and electronic communications as well as those intended for social media
  • Regularly contact colleagues and key faculty members to keep abreast of important news and issues
  • Conduct and summarize interviews with researchers, including for news items
  • Plan and implement media and public relations strategies in collaboration with other members of the team
  • Establish and develop strong contacts with journalists in a variety of media
  • Respond to enquiries from  and proactively contact media , individuals and other organizations via e-mail and telephone
  • Brief various McGill staff, faculty members for media interviews or other communication activities, such as press conferences
  • Initiate outreach opportunities to media regarding new projects and other McGill news
  • Target certain national and international blogs, magazines and traditional media for enhanced McGill visibility

 

Minimum Education & Experience: 

Undergraduate degree

Three (3) years' related experience

 

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities: 

Experience in journalism, a key asset, dealing with members of the press. Extensive and demonstrated oral and written communication skills in both English and French. Excellent interpersonal skills and diplomacy. Highly developed sense of priority and urgency. Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines, in a context of changing priorities. Demonstrated proficiency with new media vehicles. Knowledge of commonly used software and technical tools.
