Position Summary


The MSU Alumni Office advances Michigan State University by building pride and strategically fostering meaningful engagement of Spartans through connections, service and investment.


Reporting to the MSU Alumni Office Director of Marketing, the Communications Manager will be responsible for organizing and overseeing the creation of promotional materials and brand identify for the MSU Alumni Office programming, events and activities through the development, design, creation and production of various mediums (paper, electronic, web, etc). The Communications Manager will participate as a member of the Marketing and Communications team to articulate design priorities, receive information and communicate project status.

A successful candidate in this position is one with strong project management skills and the ability to work on several communications campaigns simultaneously. 


Publication and invitation development:

  • Manage creation, production and dissemination of printed and digital publications for education, development and administration purposes such as brochures and publications, logos, promotional displays, newsletters, event invitations, postcards, program guides, advertising, etc., for assigned in-house accounts.

Digital marketing support:

  • Coordinates the creation of digital content and website management.
  • Contributes to the overall growth, monitoring and engagement strategies for social media.

Program marketing support and production delivery:

  •  Supports the coordination of communications strategies.
  •  Develops and organizes specialized communications plans.
  • Plans and coordinates photo opportunities, videos and media publications in order to inform the public and key stakeholders about MSUAO programs and events.
  • Creates and maintains multiple concurrent campaign timelines.
  • Strategizes on audience segmentation and testing.
  • Provides writing support and copy editing while adhering to the university’s editorial style guide.
  • Maintains university and MSU Alumni Office branding, style guide, graphic identity, and ensures design consistency and quality.
  • Develops and discusses budget requirements and determines costs based on quantities needed. Ensures invoices are accurately submitted to department for accounts payable.
  • Delivers finished communications deliverables to client. Follows up with client to determine satisfaction. Makes any necessary adjustments to meet client needs and expectations.
  • Builds emails using the CRM system, iModules.
  • Provides graphic design support (digital and print) for event promotion and program support.
  • Provides updated campaign reports and timelines to program directors.



•             Researchers/ Faculty/ Staff – to solicit news items and interview as sources for media information materials.

•             University Departments – to initiate bids for printing, arrange photo sessions, monitor work progress and exchange information.

•             Graphics coordinators/ Editors/ Clients – to receive, formulate, coordinate and provide project information.

•             Design staff/ Student Employees/ Support Staff/ Outside Vendors – to coordinate and check individual assignments.

•             Printing Representatives – to select paper stock.

•             Specialists/ Administrators/ Information Services/ Co-Workers – to exchange information.

•             Volunteers – to exchange information.

•             Photographers – to discuss and/or supervise photography needed for projects.

•             Business Officer Personnel – to maintain correct billing and administrative information.


Direction is received from the MSU Alumni Director of Marketing.


May provide first level supervision over student employees.


Errors in the dissemination of information to the public or within the University could cause serious inconvenience to other people both within and outside the university and have an adverse impact in the development of support and goodwill for the University.


Negligible disagreeable working conditions. The job requires moderate physical effort and involves sitting place, viewing a VDT screen, manual dexterity for operating equipment and lifting boxes and bulk mailings of 26 to 75 pounds 26-75% of the time.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Communications, Advertising, Journalism, Telecommunications or Public Relations.
  • One to three years of experience in public and media relations, composing and editing, publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet; public presentation; project management and social media management; graphic design;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • May require valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position.
  • Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
  • This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.

Desired Qualifications

•             Graphic design experience with Adobe software, including Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop.

•             Experience in communication strategy and audience analytics.

•             Proven track record of successful project management examples.

•             Excellent communication.

•             Familiarity of the university editorial style guide and AP Style Guide.

•             Experience with brand management.

•             Experience managing content for social media channels.
