Communications and Engagement Officer University of Glasgow United Kingdom

Job Purpose

To coordinate and deliver the College of Science and Engineering’s communications, and other external and internal engagement activities for a range of key research themes including; 5G Communications, Data Science, Medical Technologies and International Development. 

To source and create content and materials for use at events, for the media, on the web and on social media to raise the profile of College research. 

To utilise a range of communications channels to support the development of external networks in support of the University’s Knowledge Exchange and Impact Strategy.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Develop and deliver College of Science and Engineering communications and engagement activities for key research themes including; 5G Communications, Data Science, Medical Technologies and International Development.

2. Support the College’s external communications activities with academics, industry, policy-makers, practitioners, and the public, including preparing media and publicity materials.

3. Liaise with the University’s Communications & Public Affairs Office and Marketing Team to develop and maintain the College’s external and internal profile and reputation.

4. Develop and manage the College’s social media presence for each of the research themes, creating innovative and engaging content for varying audiences.

5. Work with the Research and Business Development team, Recruitment Conversion and Marketing Manager and wider College team to present the research themes in the best possible light to funders and other relevant stakeholders. This will include attending relevant events and assisting colleagues in External Relations, Schools and Research and Innovation Services in gaining positive media coverage for College activities, and producing relevant and engaging materials.

6. Identify research or impact stories and work with colleagues in Research and Business Development, Communications & Public Affairs, and External Relations’ Marketing Team to present these via events, social media, and through digital marketing to raise awareness of the College’s Research portfolio.

7. Organise events within the College to raise the profile of key research themes and support the development of external networks; e.g. research showcases / industrial engagement events.

8. Advise and support academic staff within the School to promote and disseminate their research and scholarship to a variety of academic and non-academic audiences and stakeholders.

9. Support the College’s internal communications activities including the internal newsletter and other related content.

10. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan - Inspiring People – Changing the World http://www.gla.ac.uk/about/strategy/people/


Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications 
Essential:
A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills through personal development and progression in a similar related role(s).
Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification
level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
A2 Awareness of different media agendas and audiences.



Desirable:
B1 Educated to degree level.
B2 Understanding of the Higher Education sector.

E2 Experience of supporting, raising and managing the profile and reputation of an organisation or similar.

E4 Experience of developing and managing corporate social media profiles.
E5 Experience of planning and managing events.



Desirable:
F1 A track record of working with the media directly.

Standard Terms & Conditions

Salary will be on the Management, Professional and Administrative Grade, level 6, £28,660 - £32,236 per annum, pro rata.

This post is part time (28 hours per week) and has funding available until 31 July 2020.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.

The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities’ Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
