Imperial College London is seeking an outstanding Co-Director to join the management team of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment.The Grantham Institute was founded in 2007 through a donation from the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment. It was the first of Imperial’s seven Global Challenge Institutes. Its vision is for “a sustainable, resilient, zero-carbon future” and it works to achieve this through its mission “to contribute to, and lead on, world-class research, training and innovation towards effective action on climate change and the environment”. 

The Institute has established a world-class reputation for research, training, innovation, translation and thought leadership on issues around the low-carbon transition and global sustainability.

Duties and responsibilities

Working alongside the current Co-Director, Professor Ralf Toumi, the new Co-Director will:

  • Develop and lead the next 5-year research strategy of the Institute;
  • Develop and lead their own research programme in their home department, Contribute to Department teaching etc;
  • Ensure policy and decision makers are influenced by targeted scientific advice at local, national and international levels;
  • Foster research collaborations across the College as a basis for new, inter-disciplinary projects;
  • Raise the academic profile of the Institute, and its research, by building close relations with the UK, European and global energy research community, and its sponsors;
  • Ensure the Grantham Institute contributes to the mission of the College and is financially sound;
  • Provide leadership on fundraising, including developing and maintaining good relations with the Grantham Foundation; and
  • Engage with the members of the Advisory Board and other external partners, through both formal meetings and less formal exchanges, to enlist their help and support in driving forward the mission of the Institute.

In addition, working in a relevant Department, as a Professor, you will undertake activities such as:                                                                                                              

  • Attract high levels of sustained research income;
  • Carry out original research at highest international standing;
  • Teach and examine courses at all levels – undergraduate, masters, higher research degrees/ PhD – through lectures, seminars, tutorials, course work, training and PhD supervision;
  • Undertake departmental leadership roles and management duties, as required.

The Co-Director will be an outstanding academic with an international reputation in an area of specific relevance to the Institute.

Further information

Salary: starting salary is £84,491 per annum

Appointment to the Co-Director role will be, initially, for five years, in line with the College’s term of office for senior roles, with an open-ended academic appointment in an appropriate Department. Your time will be split between the responsibilities in their home department (40%) and the role of Co-Director (60%).
