Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Curriculum Services, Clinical Courses, the Clinical Course Manager is responsible for directing the administrative operations required to plan and implement core clinical and advanced integrated science courses in the Program in Medical Education (PME). This position also provides administrative oversight for central management of clinical courses across multiple affiliated hospitals to ensure consistency in educational experiences, learning objectives and evaluation methods. As a member of the Office of Curriculum Services (OCS) administration team, the Clinical Course Manager ensures that courses adhere to the academic and administrative standards of the PME and the School's accrediting body, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). He/she represents the PME in curriculum meetings and advises the course faculty leadership on educational strategies and formats. The Clinical Course Manager also ensures that courses comply with the guidelines, standards, and processes required by the Office of the Registrar, Office of Educational Quality Improvement (OEQI), Academic Societies, and Office of Disability Services, particularly regarding student performance, completion of academic requirements and grading, and approved accommodations to comply with the ADA.  The Clinical Course Manager partners with faculty course directors on course development and implementation, including recruitment and orientation of faculty, course planning and content delivery, administrative oversight of exam and grading processes and operational oversight of central clinical exam sessions. He/she is responsible for interpreting and advising faculty on educational program policies and applying these to individual case situations, ensuring that policies are applied consistently and equitably. Specific responsibilities include: partnering with course leadership on course-related strategic planning and oversight of course operations; advising clinical site administrators on local and central workflows; presenting academic policy updates at curriculum meetings; facilitating course and session objectives mapping; planning and implementing clinical assessment exercises, including those with standardized patients; advising faculty on teaching and learning technology solutions; providing faculty training and development on learning management and evaluation platforms; reporting statistical data as required; facilitating continuous improvement initiatives; tracking and reporting on faculty teaching effort; and onboarding of students and faculty.  The Clinical Course Manager implements deadlines for and advises course faculty on content delivery on the learning management platform. He/she partners with faculty leaders to design a highly curated, robust learning experience for students following an instructional standard that is integral to the pedagogy. The Clinical Course Manager must be well-versed in a variety of learning formats, including Case-based Collaborative Learning (CBCL), clinical skills teaching and digital exam administration practices to ensure optimal and timely delivery of course content and assessment tools.    The Clinical Course Manager collaborates with the clinical course management team to ensure smooth workflows and effective delegation of tasks to the Course Assistant and provides feedback to the Assistant Director regarding support staff performance. Performs other duties as required.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required.  Three or more years' administrative experience required, preferably in an academic setting.

The individual represents Harvard Medical School in course and curriculum planning sessions and is therefore required to have or have the potential to develop a deep understanding of the School’s MD program. Impeccable judgment, discretion, and confidentiality required. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Exemplary organizational and planning abilities, as well as intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Office and web applications. Enthusiasm for educational innovation, new media, and blended learning. Qualified candidates will possess a strong commitment to continuous process improvement, and the ability to exercise independent leadership abilities, prioritize multiple tasks, and work collaboratively with a team. High energy and ability to select appropriate opportunities to take initiative, as well as to ensure that ongoing projects move forward. Position requires promptness and reliability for periodic early morning and evening sessions and meetings.
